In the Roman Empire, England, France, and the Middle East, ever since people have been around, there has always been conflict and war and a common presence has been inhumanity. In World War I, mustard gas produced terrible blisters on soldiers who were exposed to it, but those causing this pain felt no sympathy. Today the use of poisonous gases, atomic bombs, poisoned bullets, and blinding laser weapons are all banned in warfare because they are inhumane. While war is still an ongoing international issue, Britain and the United States are more peaceful today than they were a hundred years ago because people are being taught to resolve conflict in a more humane way. Nowadays, people willingly aid others when tragedy strikes. After living through both world wars, Golding understood how inhumane people can become. In Lord of the Flies, a plane crashes and the boys aboard are forced to survive on a deserted island. Ralph, the original leader, needs to build a shelter but he ends up, “working with Simon” and “No one else” while the rest of the boys are “bathing, or eating, or playing” (Golding, 50). Through this, Golding shows that he frowns upon people who do not help others. In recent history, Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, causing immense flooding and damage. Texas is different from the rest of the United States culturally, yet people from around the country were able to put aside these differences and support those in need. An example would be students at Brookfield East High School decided to collect donations in order to help out the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Additionally, the AP Human Geography class at Brookfield East held a water drive in hopes of helping out those suffering in Puerto Rico after hurricanes. Furthermore, Virgil Dickinson, a 13-year-old victim of hurricane Harvey, was able to save the lives of 17 neighbors with just an air mattress.
