Lifestyle Changes Genetic traits make up who you are as a person. Have you ever thought about hereditary genetic traits? Family history is something that has always been known, as been a good indicator of what your kid’s health is going to be like. However there are some to believe that this is not a good indicator. There is misunderstanding to clear up. In the essay “ Inheritance: How Our Genes Change Our Lives” Moalem talks about a key concept called epigenetic. It is the study of gene expression and how external factors turn genes on and off, and up and down. Epigenetics is the process that can change gene activity without disturbing your DNA. Epigenetics is a field of study that shows how someone’s genes interact with external stimuli. …show more content…

Epigenetics studies the change of genetic expressions and how it has an affect on others genes. It can do that by switching genes on or off and determine what proteins are transcribed. There are lots of factors in life that can change genetic expressions. Epigenetic signals from the environment can even be passed down from generations to the next, without changing a single gene sequence. Epigenetic changes are something that is normal and apart of human development. However, some of the changes can be harmful to people. Not all changes in genetic expression are for the good. Some can cause disease and even depression. To understand more about epigenetic and the link between genes, health must be studied before we really understand the environmental factors and the roles of genes that contribute to health and illness. However there are lots of factors in life that can contribute to health issues and …show more content…

It’s a face-paced world and it’s not slowing down. Have you ever thought of all the harmful stuff that is in the air? Think of a big city where there are tons of cars and factories that pollute the air. After thinking about that and reading about epigenetics, environmental interactions do have an impact on people’s genes and health. Different environmental factors can damage some linkage DNA, and possibly alter genetic traits for generations to come. Environmental factors cause genes to be turned on and off. When the genes get turned on and off it can be for the good or bad depending on lifestyle factors. From the article “How do your genes and the environment interact?” There were many different ways listed that genes and the environment can interact. Those ways are mutagens and gene-gene interactions. “Mutagens are pollutants in the environment that enter the body and directly change your DNA sequence.” “Gene-gene interactions occur when pollutants in the environment do not change your DNA sequence, but rather cause a chain reaction that affects the functioning of one gene that then affects the functioning of another.” Most of diseases are a combination of genetic risk and the environment someone lives
