In the book Inheritance, the characters search for several differing things. Each character has their own personal quest and challenges to overcome, leading them to search for something greater. While reading Inheritance, characters searched for self-knowledge, self-defense, and acceptance of a death.
One example of a character searching for something was when Eragon searched for his true name on Vroengard. Asking himself what he wanted, searching for flaws in him and remembering his past were all key components to his search for self-knowledge ☺ (Hyphenated Modifier). Despite her being tortured, her mind being attacked and not knowing if the Varden was still intact without her to govern it, Nasuada did not give in and let Galbatorix or Murtagh know anything useful about the Varden. One thing she searched for was a distraction to keep her mind from thinking about anything but the Varden. An affect of this was boredom, which led her to thinking of the Varden again. Because of this, she was at risk of revealing any secrets to Galbatorix if he were to enter her mind. Another thing Nasuada searched for was a way out of her containment chamber. The text says, “After she stole the spoon, she had spent hours grinding the end of the handle against the stone slab… the moment he freed her left hand, she stabbed him underneath the chin with the sharpened handle of the spoon” (Paolini 482, 483). Killing her jailor may not have been what she wanted to do, but in her state of mind it was her only option for escape. This affected Nasuada because it helped to distract her from any attacks on the mind and also helped by passing the time, keeping her from going insane. Finally, Nasuada searched for a flaw in Galbatorix’s plan to get information out of her. In Murtagh, she found that flaw. She found that he could be manipulated and talked into easing the pain of the torture with magic. Doing this affected her because it kept her from giving information to Galbatorix while he tortured her. With her search for any ways to keep Galbatorix from knowing anything of the Varden, she kept the secrets safe and did not allow any information to be forced from
