A. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln ran for President of the United States against three other candidates who were Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union John Bell, and Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas who was a United States senator for Illinois. Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States from March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865.

B. On April 16, 1862, Abraham Lincoln signs The Emancipation Act. The Emancipation Act abolished slavery in the District of Columbia.

C. On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the final Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation granted freedom to the slaves in the Confederate States if the states did not return by that date. The Emancipation Proclamation declared “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebel states “are, and henceforward shall be free.”

D. On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address. Abraham Lincoln wanted to dedicate the speech for the dead Union soldiers that were killed at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War.
