Hello! My name is Daniel Brinker, a weekly reader of your articles in Health Times. I’ve noticed that in each article it seems that you have a strong disliking for vaccines. I personally think that as a user and encourager of vaccines, that I should tell you why they are ok. Vaccines are good because they provide immunity to a disease by inserting dead or weakened pathogens into the body. This helps people to be immune to disease and help them fight off this disease easier with these vaccinations. Vaccines are good for three reasons. They help grant active immunity to diseases and viruses, they help to acquire passive immunity, and they also protect other people around you. When you receive a vaccine you develop active immunity. This immunity is when your body develops naturally or artificially acquired immunity by exposing the body to antigens. This help to protect from invading pathogens. Passive immunity is when your body receives antibodies from another person or animal. Passive immunity is different from Active immunity because it doesn’t last forever. It doesn’t create those same disease fighting antibodies. Passive immunity only lasts for a couple of weeks or months. It can be Natural or Artificial like Active immunity. If it is created through Artificial Passive immunity an injection of prepared antibodies produced by animal or human that are immune to that disease. This allows immunity but only for a short period of time as these artificial cells eventually die. If they are receive immunity through Natural Passive immunity instead of using cells from another animal or human the immunity is granted via the mother. The simple injections have potential to save thousands of lives every year and they are making the world a safer place. Vaccines can help create an environment where children are not receptive to disease which would have taken lives in previous decades, and for the general population to be healthy, and to keep children safe from illness and disease people should vaccinate themselves. Throughout my research for vaccinations, I didn’t realize the many stances parents could support. I knew previously before researching that many parents didn’t agree with the idea of giving their child a vaccination that could possible cause an issue that wasn’t present before. Although, I always supported vaccinations strictly because of scientific facts; when I read about the many reasons why parents didn’t it was a shock and ultimately overwhelmingly disappointing. Mainly, because it seems like parents are only looking at the few effects vaccinations could have on a child. You may think Vaccinations aren’t important, but they are. One reason they are important is because by not getting vaccinated, you could be at risk of serious diseases. These diseases can include influenza, pertussis, and shingles. Another reason would be because you could increase the risk of complications such as a chronic heart disease or a weakened immune system. Also it’s important because no one has the time to get sick or ill. The last one is that you can reduce the chance of passing serious diseases to others.
The macrophages engulf and digest the foreign pathogens and leave behind parts of the pathogen called antigens that stimulates the immune system to attack them. The T-lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that can recognize antigens that are not part of the human body (non-self) and attack the human cells that have been invaded by the pathogen associated with this non-self antigen. B-lymphocytes, another type of white blood cell, also recognize foreign antigens and produce antibodies that attack and neutralize the foreign antigens to fight the infection. When a new pathogen is first detected by the immune system, it can take up to several days for the immune system to properly coordinate all the different immune cells required to fight the infection (Understanding How Vaccines Work, 2013). However, once the infection has been eliminated, the immune system has the ability to remember all of the foreign antigens that have entered the body. The memory T-lymphocytes and memory B-lymphocytes will remember every antigen they have ever encountered throughout the human’s lifetime and are able to quickly respond and initiate the immune response if the same antigen is detected again. The immune system keeps a huge supply of “millions and possibly billions of different antibodies on hand to be prepared for any foreign invader by constantly creating millions of new B cells” (How Do Vaccines Work?, 2011). Vaccines are made to mimic infections. For example, the influenza vaccine mimics the virus, but is a weakened form of it, making it difficult for the virus to reproduce or cause any serious damage. When the vaccine enters the body, T cells and B cells from the immune system begin to attack it and defend the rest of the body from the weakened virus. Not only are the T and B cells able to rid the body of the virus, some of the cells become memory cells. The memory cells then “teach” other cells how to fight of the virus. By being vaccinated, the person is not only helping themselves but others around them too. Vaccines are an important tool for preventing disease and should be mandatory for all people. Childhood vaccines protect children from a variety of serious or possibly fatal diseases, including diphtheria, measles, meningitis, polio, tetanus, and whooping cough (Clinic Staff). By vaccinating children against diseases, it helps children grow into strong, healthy adults. Today, children in the United States continuously get vaccines that protect them from more than a dozen diseases (Childhood Immunization).
Vaccines are a controversial topic. While there are many benefits to getting vaccinated, there are also some concerns. The benefits include immunization against many deadly diseases, debilitating diseases, and other simply annoying diseases. The concerns include everything from fears about vaccines causing autism, feeling they aren’t necessary for what they cost, and contracting the disease from the vaccines. While certain concerns may be valid, others are much less so, and will be examined and explained why I would choose to vaccinate my child.
Vaccines are the name for killed or weakened pathogens. They are inserted into a person to make them immune to the virus or disease. Vaccines are essential for a healthy lifestyle; the majority of the world is vaccinated, but the rest believe the side effects outweigh the benefits. Today, vaccinations are widely available to any parent or child and are well practiced. While they were not as common in the 50’s and 60’s; most children that lived during that era ended up with various diseases and eventually died from them. Parent’s that are anti vaccination forgo them due to the assumption that they cause autism and other illnesses. Most people against vaccination did not live during the epidemics to experience it firsthand to know how it really affected the country. According to Jenny McCarthy, “vaccines caused her son to become autistic, but after going through recovery and being re-evaluated she was told he was no longer autistic (Perry).” It has not been proved whether vaccines are 100% effective or defective.
Many people come to the United States of America in order to live freely and make choices based on their personal morals. Considering the fact that America is known for being the “land of the free”, people should be able to choose whether or not they want to get vaccinated. People should have the right to reject vaccinations for whatever reason it may be, whether it’s religious beliefs, health concerns, or lack of belief in the vaccination systems. Personally, Vaccinations have benefited me and my health, and I choose to get vaccinated. I choose to get vaccinated because I strongly believe in a way it helps build my immune system and keeps me from getting sick or catching diseases. However, people have different beliefs than mine. Vaccinations should be mandatory because they help keep our children, communities and future generations safe; they also provide the possibility of a world without Human Papillomavirus, whooping cough and other dangerous diseases. Vaccinations help keep our children safe from measles and 13 other different diseases. It is commonly accompanied by a painful itchy rash and fever. At one point in history, measles was a very common disease.
Since they were first created, vaccines have been the center of many controversies. Fighting for the health of children, on one side their are worried parents not wanting their children to experience harmful side effects, while the government wants the overall well being and eradication of illnesses no matter the cost. Although there are testaments to both sides of the argument, looking at scientific evidence proves the point that vaccines do more good than harm.
