Introduction Mother Nature cannot be controlled and as humans we are forced to deal with various natural disasters. We have earth quakes, hurricanes, volcanoes, tornadoes and many other types of events that are weather driven. Many natural disasters affect our everyday lives and individuals may be forced to safe areas to protect themselves from potential danger. Natural disasters can also place a financial burden on people in affected communities. Hurricanes are strong storms that have been hitting the United States for as long as history can remember. Hurricanes have the ability to rip through a community in a matter of minutes and cause millions of dollars in damage. I was really inspired to find out more information on the cost of hurricanes for both communities and individuals living within. I may have never experience a hurricane ripping through my town but I do have various reporters such as Drew Jubera and Kathryn Straach who witnessed some horrible hurricanes. Today, I will talk about three main hurricanes that have made the biggest impact on the United States. My goal is to inform you about the three most deadly hurricanes to hit the United States which were the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900, 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane and Hurricane Katrina of 2005. 1) The Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900 a) The storm reached the Texas coast south of Galveston on September 8 as a Category 4 hurricane b) This was the deadliest hurricane to ever hit the United States and caused between 8000 and 12000 deaths. c) One of the most costliest hurricanes in history at an estimated 104 billion d) The town had no sea wall to protect from the terrible storm e) There was late evacuation due to limited technology and …show more content…

f) Lead to new buildings standards and made buildings stronger with less of chance to be destroyed again 3) Hurricane Katrina of 2005 a) Hurricane Katrina formed on August 23rd, 2005 and started as a category one hurricane b) Katrina then strengthened to a category 5 hurricane and became in fact among one of the strongest hurricanes in United States history c) The third deadliest hurricane in United States history, killed at least 1500 people d) Katrina's highest storm surge of 25 to 28 feet occurred along the Mississippi coast. e) This was the most costliest hurricane in history at 108 billion f) New Orleans flooded leaving thousands of people stranded g) Over 80 percent of the city of New Orleans, Louisiana became flooded due to the storm. In some places the flood water was up to 10 to 15 feet deep
