Bystander’s are everywhere that you go. Some you don’t really notice and some you look at and think why didn’t you do something? Being a bystander can affect you in many ways. In the book The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini, the main character Amir watches his best friend, Hassan, that he grew up with get raped and beat and does nothing, “I’ll let you keep it so it will always remind you of what I’m about to do.”(73) The effects it had on him are described throughout the book, and they aren’t for the better. Latane and Darley (1968) investigated the phenomenon known as the bystander effect and staged an emergency situation where smoke was pumped into the room participants was in. Results showed that 75% of participants who were alone reported the smoke, whereas only 38% of participants working in groups of three reported (Latane & Darley, 1968). Their findings provide evidence for the negative consequence of the diffusion of responsibility. In line with the social influence principle, bystanders depend on reactions of others to perceive a situation as an emergency and are subsequently less likely to help. Latane and Darley’s findings were also supported in recent research: Garcia and colleagues (2002) found that even priming a social context by asking participants to imagine themselves in a group could decrease helping behaviour. Bystander effect and obedience to authority are theories that can be compared and contrasted. Bystander effect is, for example, when someone is publicly in need and even though there are many people passing by or in the area, no one stops to help because they’ve seen no one else stop to help. In a video called The Bystander Effect they did an experiment to test the theory by having an actor lay by the steps of a busy area in Liverpool and moan “Help me”. The actor, Peter, was passed by many people who glanced his way, but didn’t stop to help even after 20 minutes of him yelling for help. Next they had a lady lay on the steps and after 4 minutes and 30 seconds a man finally comes over to help and forms what a narrator refers to as a new group with new rules to actually help. After the man comes to her assistance so does another lady and then more people follow. In the next part of the experiment they have Peter come back dressed as business man and it only takes 6 seconds before someone comes to help him. A real life example of bystander effect is the police brutality incident that happened at Spring Valley High School where a 15 year old girl was tackled and assaulted by a police officer for no reason that justified that treatment. Thinking about normal social interactions and normal social behaviors, I think of comfortable. When I sit down with a friend, a usual routine is followed, “Hey, how are you, what’s new?” (e.g. My turn, your turn). These questions between my friend and I include eye contact, attention, and facial expression. Usually, I feel that I give my friend my undivided attention. Other normal characteristics include: remembering what the person has just said so a comment can be made, as well as each comment is appropriate and in relation to the current topic. Moreover, the duration between each question or comment is short.

In the last few years, however, more attention has been given to prosocial behaviors that continue for an extended time—sustained prosocial actions. There are a number of different kinds of behaviors that might be classified as sustained prosocial actions (e.g., caring for the elderly in a nursing home, the donation of blood at a blood center), but this study is primarily concerned with volunteerism.
While volunteering around special needs accidents will happen. My first time volunteering, there were two accidents in one day in the same classroom. The first accident was a kid threw up on himself and his book, and the second accident was a kid accidentally had an accident in his pants. In the profession, they have to learn that these kids aren’t perfect and they will have accidents daily. Volunteering in these circumstances will better prepare them for when they do pursue this career if they choose to do so and will benefit them when it comes to getting a job in the area due to the experience that they will have received. It is so important that without it, settlements and groups wouldn’t have formed the way we know it today. It is the building block of society, people get together and design rules, institution and select officials to guide their way of living.
