History of Lacrosse
11 December 2015 Everyone wants to know the history of football, baseball, and basketball but no one really asks, “What’s the history of lacrosse?” Lacrosse is a dangerous sport, special how the Indians played it and how the sticks were back then. Nowadays there is a difference between women and girls and men and boys lacrosse games. Lacrosse has been played for many years and we play it as a spot but the Indians have used it for many other reasons other than fun.
Indians played the most aggressive and played religiously for their gods and to honor one another. Lacrosse was a big part in the Native Americans religious lives, sometimes played to please their gods and to honor themselves as well

The Indians had believed in many gods and spirits. If they would have a bad harvest time they would play for the gods to please them and to hopefully have a better one. The Native Americans used to play lacrosse for other reasons other than for honor and to please their gods. Native American tribes would play lacrosse to settle arguments and to train their warriors for battle. Playing lacrosse would help with training warriors because they would have learn formation and how to work together. Who ever would win the game of lacrosse would win the argument. The Native Americans would injure many others in the game of lacrosse. Native Americans would severely injure or kill other Native Americans by hitting them in the head with their heavy lacrosse sticks. Because lacrosse was so violent, games would often end with fatalities. The Native Americans would play lacrosse on large fields. The fields would be larger than football fields. The Native Americans would play on fields that were 500 yards to one …show more content…
We can get a concussion playing while the Indians would severely injure or kill each other. The history of lacrosse is very different from how we play it today. There are more rules and padding. Players can get concussions playing lacrosse but they can get something worse and that’s commotio cordis. Players lacrosse sticks have evolved a lot to with the game
Lacrosse is a sport that was created by the Native Americans around the 1600s (5). The sport once known as stick ball to the Indians has evolved to a major sport across the world. Lacrosse was a sport that was a real major part of European culture before it made its way to America. It has just recently been picked up in the major ranks of colleges and even a professional level. So with the rise of this sport comes the rise of the preparatory phases to get ready for competition.
In Shadow of a Nation, by Gary Smith, it states that intertribal warfare was banned. This meant that the Native Americans no longer had a way to win glory or status anymore by rule of their culture. As stated in the article, “something had to take war’s place, some way had to be found to count coups.” The article goes on to mention how pre-battle rituals were used before big basketball games. It also compares how “the same drum cadence and honor songs used 200 years ago to celebrate the seizing of a dozen horses of the killing of three Sioux now reverberated through gymnasiums and community halls at the capture of a basketball trophy.” This explains why Alexie uses basketball as a way to gain glory, or lose it in his short stories.
Every time I play lacrosse I feel like I am a part of something greater than myself. Being a part of something greater than myself, being changed in my life forever has made me think and feel whenever I play lacrosse. When I was younger playing lacrosse was a learning experience. Playing with more skilled or less skilled girls in lacrosse and playing different positions except for one every game, practice and scrimmage all the time makes me get a different perspective. Playing lacrosse for quick sticks has changed my life forever.
Both Lacrosse and Ice hockey are two sports that share similar aspects. One example would be that they both require plenty of athletic prowess, as well as countless hours of training and practice to master. The high amount of contact in both sports enables a player to become both physically and mentally “tough”. Lacrosse has grown to its highest level of popularity it has ever reached over the last ten years. Ice hockey has seen a steady climb in its popularity over the past 25 years making it one of the most popular sports in not only Long Island, but all across the U.S. However, there are many differences as well, and we should not overlook the fact that there are plenty of distinctions between the two great sports. Many of which are the main reasons that these are obviously two separate sports.
The Europeans wanted to spread this sport, and was successful doing so. As soon as they played their first documented games, other teams also joined in and quickly became an official sport. The popularity of lacrosse rose in The Americas as soon as the Caughnawaga Indians demonstrated a game in Montreal, Canada. This was reported in a newspaper, and white men became interested. In 1876, quickly after the first set of playing rules were announced, New York University became the first team to be established in the US. During the spread of lacrosse, Queen Victoria gave recognition to the game when she endorsed a match being played in England. A popular figure being involved in this sport had a big impact on the future of lacrosse. 1904 was an important year in lacrosse history. For the first time, the sport became an actual event played in the Olympics which Canada had won the gold medal. As the next few years passed, the Unites would have won the next gold medals, but the glory moments of lacrosse quickly came to an end in 1908. It’s not completely clear as to why the sport was excluded, but research has shown that around this time, the global interests have changed and lacrosse seemed to be going out of style. As this was a disappointment to lacrosse history, it did not stop the sport from achieving much more. The still got to be a part of the world games and was involved in the World Cup. Men have always dominated in sports, while women weren’t necessarily recognized for their skills even though they do just as well. 1931, was their year. Women's lax was now recognized as a sport, rather than just a hobby. Many more teams were organized, and they participated in nearly the same activities as the men did. Equality of the sexes has always been an issue, Men has always been more dominant, so it is important to give credit to women for getting as much attention as they should. Today, it is still not exactly equal. The rules for men are way more
Soccer and lacrosse are obviously two different sports , but in a way they are both very similar to each other. Similarly, they both use a ball for their main part of the game. They use the ball to bring it down the field and a try to score on the opposing team. Another similarity is that they both have goalkeepers to help protect the ball from not going in on the team's side. They both stand in their goal box and they are able to bring it down field if they want. In addition, they use nets on the back of the goalkeepers with bars that show how big the goal is and so the ball doesn't fly out of the field when the team scores.Another example of a similarity between soccer and lacrosse is that they both involve a lot of running. For both sports midfield is the position where you have to run
The lacrosse players would go up to each other and smack at each other’s sticks trying to dislodge the ball. The French named the game lacrosse which means the game of the stick. Sometimes a player would hit an opposing team’s player, severely injuring the person or breaking bones. There is even one account of a player dying. Anthony Aveni an editor for History.org says, “It is quite common to see someone crippled for the rest of his life who would not have had this misfortune but for his own obstinacy” (paragraph 9). The Indians did not have a goal so they used landmarks such as rocks and trees for a goal. Jane Claydon, an editor for Federation of International Lacrosse claims, “Some estimates have mentioned between one hundred and one hundred thousand players…. On the field at one time” (paragraph 2). There are tons of players. The fields were very extreme ranging anywhere from nine hundred yards to nine miles in length. Players at one end could not see the ball at the other end. The game would last from sun up to sun down many
It all started freshman year of high school. I really wanted to get involved in some kind of sport or club. I couldn’t decide what to do. Many people said I should join the lacrosse team and my response was “I have never played before, how am I suppose to make the team”. I always had an interest in lacrosse however I was scared to go out and buy all the expensive equipment and not make the team.. I went home that night and asked my parents what I should do. My dad encouraged me to go out and try. He said it doesn’t hurt to try. That next morning of school, I raced to the athletic office and signed up for lacrosse, and when that bell rang after school I went to the lacrosse store nearest to me and bought all of the gear so that I could make the first tryout. The fist tryout was the day after I bought all of the gear.
Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America, having been played by Native American tribes long before any European had even set foot on the continent. A century after European missionaries discovered the game played by Native Americans, they began to play it themselves, starting in the 18th century. From there, it evolved and grew in popularity from a very savage game that resembled war, into what it is today, a recreational sport played widely in America and other countries. As U.S. Lacrosse literature aptly puts it, “Lacrosse is a game born of the North American Indian, christened by the French, adopted and raised by the Canadians, and later dominated by the Americans.” When the first people of America started playing lacrosse centuries ago, the game served many purposes.
When we are young, we are taught to treat everyone equally. Naturally, as children you learn and apply and hope that another person does the same. Rights, they are basic and unalienable to all humans upon entering a foreign or country of citizenship. Fighting for equal treatment to the prominent race has created history that is left for future activist to involve themselves with past history, and revive movements. Equal treatment amongst the different cultures is necessary for the social and political success for this country. As citizens of a country, we expect that the melting pot of cultures to be civil with one another and the representation of cultures be positive. But what happens when a native from the North American country is targeted through sports? Sports: physical active games, fan filled, entertaining to the public, and usually represented by an object. The typical sports mascot varies between an animal, historical figures to a fictional character. To the public, some mascots that have a positive outlook since they are just “things” representing a game; to the observational public there are some mascots that have a demeaning aspect. In the case of the use of Native Americans to represent a team, it is offensive and controversial due to the accumulated years of racism and violence against them, and there must be a change for the progressive society. This dissection of the negative history, the controversy of the issue, the opposing defense, and how this affects the Native American community are important to further analyze the problem.
Participation in sports and games has long been a part of Native culture. The most significant example of a sport invented and played by Natives is lacrosse. Lacrosse is still designated as the official sport of Canada despite the overwhelming popularity of hockey (http://canada.gc.ca). Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by Native Americans and Canadians at the time of European contact. Almost exclusively a male team sport, it is distinguished from other stick and ball games, such as field hockey or shinny, by the use of a netted racquet with which to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch and vault it into or past a goal to score a point.
The origin of soccer in America has long been disputed. Some say that it was brought to America by immigrants. People claim that it was brought by the settlers of Jamestown, New Orleans, and Ellis Island. However, there is another reasonable source that people have discovered. It is have been revealed that the American Indians used to play a game similar to modern soccer called Pasuckuakohowog. It literally translates to “they gather to play ball with the foot”. In Pasuckuakohowog, there were goals that were a half-mile wide and a mile apart from each other. Games involved up to 500 people and were very dangerous. Records show that the game was played in the 17th century. This could prove that Pasuckuakohowog is what started it all for soccer in America.
Youth Hockey Growth in the United States is the main focus of this research. The sport of hockey has been around for nearly 200 years. The game was produced from a form of stick and ball games started by immigrants. These immigrants were British soldiers who brought their type of hockey to Canada. Paintings from the 1830’s depict the sport of ice-hockey taking off in Canada.(Garth, Vaughan) As the sport grew so did the age groups in which it was played. Many sports start their growth from the elders down to the youth. The same can be said for ice-hockey. Many gentlemen started to play the sport as a way to pass the time. This is when the children began to take a liking to the sport. Fathers began to teach their children the fundamentals and from there, the rest is history.
Immigration has allowed for the diversity and development of many different sports. It has allowed for cultural diversity and techniques to be shared. Immigration has enabled Sports such as hockey and lacrosse which were not commonly known outside of North America, to be known ‘back home’. Some of the best hockey players
Sports played an important role in Irish culture and it was essential to organize them as best as possible for the people of Ireland. The Gaelic Athletic Association was organized by Michael Cusack in 1885 to restore traditional Irish games that had been overrun by British sports (Hutchinson 158). Games such as hurling and Gaelic football were revived to give the Irish sports to associate...
