Many people may ask what is opera? Opera is a form of work that is very dramatic. It is sung by singers called opera singers who are known for their very beautiful voices. Opera began in the Baroque period, it originated in Italy and it quickly became popular spreading all over Europe. With this style, the singer has to have a certain type of voice, they have to be able to project their voices differently than normal singer. The opera singers were usually accompanied by orchestras and different instruments. In this paper I am going to tell you about Leontyne Price, Kathleen Battle, and Linda Maguire who are opera singers. The first opera singer I am going to tell you about Leontyne Price. Leontyne Price is an African- American soprano who became really famous, she now is retired. Price was born under the name Mary Violet Leontyne Price in Laurel, Mississippi on February 10, 1927. Leontyne Price enjoyed music from a very early age with her parents encouragement. She began singing at her church in the choir and formal training at the age of five. Her music talents were watched all the time by family and friends including Price’s aunts employers, The Chisholms. According to biography.com, “Following her time at Oak Park Vocational High School, where she was a standout pianist and member of the glee club, Price enrolled at the college of Education and Industrial Arts in Wilberforce, Ohio”
Leontyne Price being and African- American who sang on television and was awarded the Presidential medal of Freedom. Kathleen Price whose unruly behavior got her dismissed from a job but was able to return 22 years later. And also Linda Maguire who interest in music as well as neuroscience helped her research and discover that she can use music as a way to help patients with alzheimers and dementia.
