Despite different customs and traditions throughout the world, one of the oldest holidays, Halloween, is still celebrated all over the globe today (Halloween around the World). Halloween is known for being “a time of celebration and superstition” for all who celebrate it (History of Halloween). The Celtic people, who lived in what we know as Ireland began the tradition of Halloween nearly 2,000 years ago. The idea of Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celtic new year occurred on November 1st, marking “the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter” (History of Halloween). All Souls’ Day is still practiced in these areas and is honored by a three-day celebration from the evening of October 31st through November 2nd (Halloween around the World). This time is known as Dia De Los Muertos, which translates to Day of the Dead, which is their festivity of what we call Halloween. Dia De Los Muertos is designed as a way to honor the dead, who on Halloween are said to return back to their homes. During this time, the homes are decorated with candy, flowers, photographs, freshwater, as well as “the deceased’s favorite foods and drinks” as a way to honor them (Halloween around the World). They will even leave a wash basin and towel out “so that the spirit can wash before indulging in a feast” (Halloween around the World). To help all deceased relatives make it back to the correct homes candles and incenses are burned, and the gravesites are even tidied up and decorated. At the end of the celebration, on November 2nd, the relatives of the deceased will meet at the gravesite for a picnic and a way to remember the departed.
