Cupping is a widely practiced form of therapy in which blood flow is manipulated on a patch of skin through suctioning from a cup shaped object placed on the surface of the skin. There are generally two categories of cupping therapy: dry cupping and wet cupping (What is Cupping Therapy n.d). All three variants follow the basic principle of redirecting blood flow. The main benefit from this sort of therapy is thought to be detoxifying the blood and therefore the body, allowing healing to take place thereafter. Supporters believe the suction placed on the skin increases blood flow to the area in need of relief. The claims of the therapeutic value of this practice include: treating pain, increasing blood circulation to muscles and tissue, loosening …show more content…

Dry cupping consists of creating suction on the subjects skin to attach the cup on. Some ways to create that suction include sucking air out of the cup or heating the glass up which is another type of dry cupping, called fire cupping (What is Cupping Therapy n.d). Wet cupping is a very popular form of cupping in the Middle East, particularly Muslim population. Wet cupping consists of making small cuts or pricks on the skin prior to placing a suctioned cup on the area. This allows for blood to accumulate in the cup; the idea behind it being that the accumulating blood pulls all the toxins in the body out with it (What is Cupping Therapy n.d). The reason why it is so popular amongst the Muslim community is because this form of cupping was used by the Islamic Prophet, Mohammad.
