INFORMATION PROCESSING MODEL Introduction How does information get into our brain and how do we share that information later? Cognitive psychologists have imagined individuals as a processor of information, in much the same way that as a computer takes-in information and follows a program to produce an output. Just as a computer receives, stores and brings up information, so do our minds. Looking more closely to how we as humans process information cognitive psychologist have developed a model to explain the discrete steps in which we process, return and retrieve information. This model is widely known as the information processing model of memory by Atkinson and Shiffrin's (1968). Goal Information processing model helps learners to pursue and master information. They provide cognitive strategies so that students can plan, organise and build based on their objectives. It is about students developing intellectual skills and attainment of knowledge. Stages of Information Processing • Displacement: This process occurs in STM, when we shift our attention to a new incoming information which may lead to disremembering. • Interference: occurs in LTM, which create learning difficult and recall of experiences challenging due to prior experiences. How to retain Information While these sequences display the order in which we interact with and store information, they do not simply take place as we experience daily events. As explained by (Mazarin, n.d.), not everything we experience goes directly into our short- or long-term memory. In order for us to absorb the information around us and then take it into our levels of memory, there are certain things we have to do. These include using selective attention, maintenance rehearsal and elaborative rehearsal. Selective
