Since the beginning of time, the Russian country has made several tremendous impacts on the world that will go down in history forever. One of the major impacts that Russia has affected the world with was literature. Russian literature became significant during the time where everything politically was drastically changing in the 19th century. Russian literature became an interest because the stories were been written about the everyday Russian life that the rest of the world knew very little about, especially Europe: “. . . it was a European stereotype to refer to the Russians as “barbarians” (Massie, 169). The style of literature that focuses on everyday living is known as realism and romanticism. These were the highlighted points in literature that portrayed politics and culture to represent Russia to what it truly is. Nikolai Gogol and Fyodor Dostoyevsky are two of the main writers that wrote their stories like The Nose and The Double to show a representation of the Russian government system through the people of that time.
In the 19th century, before Russian literature became a worldwide hit, the Russian country was going through changes that affected the people in a new. In the 1830s, the new Russia known as Golden Era came through. This was the time romanticism came through and started the rise in Russian literature. Romanticism focused on the theme of romance. Alexander Pushkin was the first recognized poet, and then came Nikolai Gogol who was the first known novels. After romanticism impacted the literature world, realism merged out. In an example of this would be the Bible. The Bible was not written to hide from the government like the Russian’s did, it was written by many different people in a different translation that brought a divergent meaning to whomever was reading. Much part of the Bible is telling a story within a story. For example, “turning water into whine” is identified as being a miracle in the biblical text. But in the really world, it’s not possible to do that sort of thing like the way Jesus did it. A writer’s way of expressing stories was the way that politics and everything else that might have not been accepted by the government was influenced in Russian literature in the 19th century.
During Russia’s transition to communism in the early 20th century, conflict and unease permeated every part of life. Nothing was stable and very little of what the Bolsheviks had fought for had come to fruition by the time the USSR disbanded in 1991. The “classless society”, which was to work together for the prosperity of everyone, never became a reality. In the end, the majority of Russia’s 20th century was an utter failure on a grand scale. However, there were many amazing products of the system do to the great importance of education in Russian culture. Priceless novels were written, timeless movies were made, and great scientific endeavors were realized despite the rigid control placed upon Russian persons by the government. In fact, some of the most memorable written works of the time were written protests to the creativity-stifling situation many writers found themselves in. Because of the danger to their lives should the wrong people be upset by their writings, Yevgeny Zamyatin and Mikhail Bulgakov wrote their most popular, Soviet-life condemning novels under the guise of satire. Even though they’re satirizing the same subject, in both We and The Master and Margarita respectively, they take very different paths to do so.
Dostoyevsky's writing in this book is such that the characters and setting around the main subject, Raskolnikov, are used with powerful consequences. The setting is both symbolic and has a power that affects all whom reside there, most notably Raskolnikov. An effective Structure is also used to show changes to the plot's direction and Raskolnikov's character. To add to this, the author's word choice and imagery are often extremely descriptive, and enhance the impact at every stage of Raskolnikov's changing fortunes and character. All of these features aid in the portrayal of Raskolnikov's downfall and subsequent rise.
“The Nose” and “The Overcoat,” along with Gogol’s other stories in the collection, are early representatives of comedic social commentary. Not only does Gogol engage the reader with components of Russian society, especially the major gap between the privileged people and the commoners, but he utilizes comedy to highlight the absurdity of this social polarization.
What if the government were not allowed to ask you for information that is discoverable through computer matching? Should the government be allowed to use this technique to yield the same information? This ethical dilemma is covered in this paper. Relevant information will be used from the laws in the United States and the European Union to illustrate the different perspectives on the privacy of citizens and the approaches each government takes to it.
Now-a-day, biometric authentication system or simply biometric system, offers a reliable and user-friendly solution to the problem of identity management by establishing the identity of an individual based on “who the person is”, rather than the knowledge-based i.e. “what the person knows" or token-based i.e. “what the person carries” (Jain et al., 1999). The word biometrics is derived from the Greek words bios (meaning life) and metron (meaning measurement); biometric identifiers are measurements from living human body (Maltoni et al., 2003). Biometric system refers to automatically identify or verify an individual's identity based on his physiological characteristics (e.g. fingerprints, face, iris and hand geometry) and behavioral characteristics (e.g. gait, voice and signature) (Figure 2.1). Ancillary characteristics (also known as soft biometric) such as gender, ethnicity, age, eye color, skin color, scars and tatoos also provide some information about the identity of a person. However, soft biometric traits do not provide sufficient evidence to precisely determine the identity (Jain et al., 2004a). Biometric traits provide a unique and permanent binding between an individual and his identity. The Realism Movement in the nineteen century provoked society to transition into a whole new mindset in the way they viewed the world. It was more than a movement or a passive trend, but it became more of a lifestyle. In the 18th century, the United States experienced The Enlightenment in which society became more open to becoming more educated. This is a broad interpretation of the time era that said that, “The Enlightenment produced the first modern theories of psychology and ethics…. creating the individual character according to the individual experience” (Bodrogean, Adina). United States transitioned into a Romanticism era that due to the romantic artists and authors common themes at the time were the nature of love, right vs evil, and heroism. Authors were sugar coating their works and about heroes just unrealistic anecdotes about life. The Civil War was a turning point society became aware about the hardships, devastation and fear. Life wasn’t all about hope and optimism. Society would start to question religion and life itself which led to the realist view of the time era. We transitioned into a new era where society encounters the hardships in life and how Romanticism was not all the life was about. In the nineteen century the Realism Movement was uprising in the literature aspect with authors and playwrights such as Langston Hughes, Henrik Ibsen, and Anton Chekhov.
Realism in American literature was a profound movement because it depicted current social realities and lives of normal people especially woman. Two major stories had a major description on what realism is. “Story of An Hour” and “The Yellow Wallpaper” showed the characteristics, definition, and how women had a voice and verbalized the reality of life. Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman were the authors of these two stories who influenced the movement of realism. With these two stories written by two great authors during the time helped view how it was different from romanticism.
