Culture, family background and the society in which I live all play a vital part molding the persona of me today. My actions, thoughts and decisions have all been influenced by my environment and the people in which I interact. The main influences that has molded have been the fact that I was born in a Christian household, the Jamaican culture and society and the hardships faced and seen in my lifetime.
“Before a crash a man’s heart is lofty, and before glory there is humility.” (Proverbs 18:12, New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, 2013). With these words I guard my heart and actions. Rich in music, food, dance and much folklore, the Jamaican culture has stirred in me a desire to explore other cultures, delving deep into their way of life and way of doing things. Despite the fact that I have never travelled, I have a strong desire for exploration all due to the Jamaican culture. This is because the culture is made of a small part of many other cultures combined to form its own unique piece of the world. This has also generated in me a strong love for Jamaica. Of course, naturally, when someone has a love for something they want to see the best of it. So I think my place in the Jamaican society to make it better. To improve the health which will improve the longevity of lives in Jamaica, not as a doctor, nurse or surgeon, but in my own way and field of engineering. I love inventing. One famous scientist has said the following words, “When everything seems to be going against you remember the airplane takes off against the win, not with it.” – Henry Ford. If the airplane can do it then, cannot I? This is the mentality that I have developed from facing all that I have in my lifetime. Amongst the most wearisome of my worries was gaining monetary stability. However, I did not make that discourage me. I always told myself that I would gain education and I would not let anything stop me. Living in a single parent family though did not make that dream easy for me, but I sought help from gracious organizations that have helped me throughout the years. I would want to be the person to help someone just like me who does not have the financial backing in getting an education. This is one of my goals as well as to help youths in my community to turn their backs on drugs and gambling and see the bigger picture of the world that we live in. I would love to let all youths know that if they have the will to become the next Nobel Prize winner then they will become as they please.
