Parenting Style on Teen’s Behavior The Development of an adolescent is most significantly affected by the way how parents nurture and shape them. According to Morin (2016), a parent’s discipline approach, has a huge impact on the type of relationship they have with their children and how they will react on different situations. The way they discipline and handle them has a big impact in the child’s outlook and aspirations in life. According to Drinkworth (2016), children who have parents involved in their life are more likely to positively act to situations. They will have minimized participation on dangerous cases like fighting, illegal drinking, and smoking. The way parents handle themselves also greatly affects a child’s decision in life. An optimistic parent is more likely to raise a child with a positive mindset (). Such mindset does not dismiss the negative. Instead, negativity is approached with the positive essence. As a teen grows up with this mindset, he/she will respond positively and appropriately to different kinds of situations. These decisions may also include the career they plan to take in the near future. As stated by Bettina Lankard (as cited in Vargas – Benitez, 2013), teens living happily with and seeing their family thriving due to a good career path are more likely to imitate the same path taken by their parents. However, it is not the same for those teens in the opposite situation – a teen who is lonely and sees that their family is financially struggling. In this study, another relationship between parenting styles and child development is presented. Participants were 7,836 adolescents enrolled in six high schools in San Francisco. They were provided with a questionnaire that included student background information, self-reported grades, parental attitudes and behaviors, and family commutation information. The study included three parenting styles, which were authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. Each one of the styles were described in the students’ questionnaire. The authoritarian style included the idea that as a response to a bad grade, parents tend to get upset, and when good grades are achieved, parents tell the student to do even better than what they have done. On the other hand, permissive parenting style was described as parents no caring about the students’ grade, and that hard work in school is not important for them. When he gets home his parents punish him by beating him with a stick. They do not explain to him why they are hitting him or they do not take the time to ask why he has arrived home late. Authoritarian-parents who are punitive and focus on gaining a child's obedience to parental demands rather than responding to the demands of the child.Authoritarian parenting styles give little to no options to a child. What the parent says goes. It is a rigid approach to raising children that may have been most effective in times of great famine or toil. It was used most commonly in large, traditional families in which the father was the patriarch, and everyone else was called to follow his command. Times have changed greatly since. Doctors see a problem with this approach in modern times,it creates a distance between parent and child in which the child doubts the parent's love for him. It is based on punishment, which can easily create anger.
Diana Baurmind and Alfred Adler have similar categories of parenting styles. Authoritative parenting can be compared to democratic and encouraging. Both of these styles offer love and security of the child. They express the parent is in control, but the parent also respect their child with explaining parental actions in a positive way. Permissive parenting can be compared to over-submissive parenting style. The child is rude, and demanding. The parent usually accepts the child’s behavior. In my opinion, the parent does not want to upset the child, or bother with correcting the behavior, so they will give in by rewarding the child in order to correct the child’s behavior. Authoritarian parenting can be compared to over-coercive parenting. These parents are very strict with children. My father can be compared to this parenting style. There was no reasoning, no communication, and his actions were final. This kind of parenting reminds me of being in the military. Finally, uninvolved parenting can be compared to neglecting parenting. I almost wanted to compare uninvolved to rejecting, but I cannot necessarily say the parent has denied acceptance. The parent is selfish, and does not even provide the bare minimum for their child’s necessities. I can compare this type of parenting from a 16 year old mother from the show Teen Mom’s. Authoritative parents enforce limits to their child’s behavior while considering their child’s point of view. Unlike authoritarian parents, authoritative parents believe in consequences rather than punishments. Children raised with authoritative discipline tend to be happy and successful. They are often good at making decisions and evaluating safety risks on their own. They grow up to be responsible adults who feel comfortable expressing their opinions. Authoritative parents create a balance between authoritarian and permissive parenting styles. For example, there are times when a parent needs to have their child obey them, with no exception, and there are also times when a parent needs to allow their child to make mistakes without their interference.
