With numbers as high as 3.5 million, infertility is affecting more couples than some may realize and the smaller family size isn’t the only thing causing frustration within these couples (Daniluk, 2001). Along with many tears and sleepless nights, infertility can bring about various types of health issues, copious amounts of stress, financial problems, and could eventually lead to divorce. Although there aren’t many reports claiming that infertility is on the rise, it is still a dispute and will likely be a common wound within some marriages that therapists will address.
What is infertility?
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) describes infertility as the result of a disease (an interruption, cessation, or disorder of body functions, systems, or organs) of the male or female reproductive tract which prevents the conception of a child or the ability to carry a pregnancy. Unless things such as medical history or physical symptoms are found, it is suggested to not have an infertility evaluation for about 12 months of having unprotected intercourse with failure to conceive (American Society for Reproductive Medicine, n.d.).
