People not born into a wealthy family have many struggles throughout their life. Especially during the war when they have no other family or friends to turn to and they are not allowed crossing the border. Tariq had troubles putting a roof over his family’s head while the war was going on while the wealthier side of Afghanistan fled or stayed in their protected homes.Cars in Canada in the 21st century are barley a luxury. Almost every Canadian has one. The fact that Mariam has never touched or even seen a car is astounding. Mariam is a lower class Afghan, so she is not able to go to school, she can then not get a job later on in life and will never have a house or car even close to as nice as Jalils’. Because of one mistake Nana made by having a child with her boss, she has affected her life negatively in so many ways. Tariq and his family left Kabul when he was a young adult to start a better life in Pakistan. They never made it further than Peshawar. With discrimination comes social class, people look down upon others that live a different and tougher lifestyle than they doThis displays that Amir has access to a good education, something that lower class citizens cannot achieve. Because Hassan and Ali weren’t born into a wealthy family, they are forced to work to obtain the basic needs of life. Hassan eventually learns to accept life the way it was given to him and makes the best of cleaning the house while Amir goes off to get an education.This quote shows how rude Afghan people, or any people for the matter can treat someone that doesn’t follow their religion or live in their social class. They believe it is uncommon for someone to go from a servant in your household to another member of the family even if they’re in love. This shows that Amir is embarrassed to be Hassan’s friend. He believes Hassan is a lower class citizen because of his race and the fact that he is a “servant”. He only plays with Hassan when no ones around because he is afraid someone else will judge him for talking to a Hazara. The next quote is when Amir and Baba visit the doctor in America to get a CAT scan for Baba’s cancer. In the Kite Runner, Assef the bully treats Hassan very differently than Amir and the other boys in the town. Hassan is a Pashtun “Flat-Nose” who Assef believes is race that is a threat to the purity of Afghanistan. He expresses hatred towards anyone that has that same background. Especially Hassan. Amir also treats Hassan differently.
