Inequality Among Minority Groups

A minority group is defined as “a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their lives than members of a dominant or majority group”(1). Most minority groups are defined by common characteristics such as distinguishing skin colors, language, and are commonly tight-knit and have high amounts of marriages within the group. Members of these groups fall victim to colonialism, the maintenance of power for the long term from one territory by another. Victims of these inequalities are often presented with less opportunities because of their false labels and unfair stereotypes. All of the minority groups are affected by the inequalities in different way socially, politically, and even in the media. In general, there are four basic types of minority groups: Racial, Ethnic, Religious, and Gender. However, the term minority does not necessarily only refer to the numbers of the people among that group. Women make up over half of the population and still are defined as a minority group. (5)

I believe that race is often the most referred to as a type of minority but when the facts were examined, the treatment of women has so many similar characteristics. The reading even stated the patriarchal society is an universal concept. The fact is, most countries consider males to be the dominant gender. Historians struggle to arrive upon how this dominance was concluded and the only logical explanation was due to physical limitations of childbearing. Women could withstand the same conditions due to their fragile body type, and were left home to care for the children. This was were this inequality is thought to be originated. ...I feel that if there was a little more acceptance on a global standpoint, and the movement to judge for a person’s ability rather than biased opinions, these problems could be abolished completely. More policy needs to be established to level the unequal wage, a problem to me, that seems ridiculous that this hasn't yet been solved. There is no question that with enough compliance of the global community, this problem can be one of the history books instead of an ongoing struggle for equality. Having role models in the community who can lead the way or break the mold of conformity, are who makes change possible at all. Without Susan B. Anthony showing up to the polls in 1872, there might have been a longer time period of voting restrictions. Every time someone stands up there is a chance of a chain reaction, sparking a movement, a revolution.
