India is a country with diverse customs, traditions, values, religions.

For any country its art and culture are a reflection of its traditions,

values and civilisation.

‘Cinema’ is highly associated with the culture and tradition of a

particular country.

However, cinema is India has always been considerably influential

over society.

As India is the most complex, heterogeneous society on earth and its

heterogeneity has so far made it impossible for a single set of

alternative film industry to emerge across the country, therefore,

regional film industries such as Tollywood, Kollywood etc came in

existence.

So, an aspect common to all these film industries is the non-viable

and stereotyped depiction of women.

1. WOMEN ARE WEAK

Today, movies and television continue to portray women as

“damsels in distress”. Women are often displayed as weak

creatures that are easily frightened, defenceless and frantic.

It is often portrayed as women are reliant or dependent on men.

For example : Movies such as Kabhi khushi kabhi gam, Welcome,

Om Shanti Om, Houseful 1 & 2, Devdas, Leela, Roy, Hum apke

hai kaun, Maine pyaar kyun kiya, Main hu na, main prem ki

Deewani hun also Hollywood movies such as 50 Shades of Grey,

Twilight etc.

In such type of movies women are portrayed as weak, helpless and

the sole purpose of their existence is to just please the man and to

magnify the role of the male cast.

2. WOMEN ARE THE HOUSEWIVES

In most of the movies homely or so called 3s – Sundar, Susheel ,

Sanskaari women are preferred as perfect wife material.

According to the so called patriarchal society, tasks of a noble

woman includes, staying at home, performing household chores,

taking care of children and wait for the arrival of their husbands

from the office. Sanskaari bahus though win the hearts in the

movies but it is one of the major drawbacks of patriarchal society.
