Please provide a general description of the independent study including purpose and expected outcomes. The class that I am petitioning to take as an independent study is a Study of Science Fiction Films. This class would take place of one of my film electives. I believe an independent study would be beneficial rather than the traditional class due to the fact SCAD does not currently offer specifically science fiction film classes and my life circumstances. I am expecting my first child in March and my doctors have recommended that I find ways to be able to take my classes remotely in case my health goes awry or the baby comes early. I believe that I have shown my professors and advisors so far that I am driven in my work and capable of getting the full experience of an independent study. The academic benefit of this class would be primarily to have a concentration in cinema studies. I would be following the same rough schedule as the other cinema studies classes, however, it would just be specific to science fiction films. The professional benefit to this class would be that I’d have a greater understanding of the genre I plan to make my career in. What are the objectives/skills to be mastered through this independent study? The primary objectives of this class are to conduct an exploration of science fiction as a genre, its film making devices, and predominantly the method story telling. The skills I would like to master through this class would be how to apply these genre conventions of science fiction to my own style of filmmaking. Through my time at SCAD, I have realized many students are passionate about a particular genre without having a wide base of knowledge about that genre. In the play Doubt, by John Patrick Shanly, Sister Aloysius is treating Father Flynn unfairly. Sister Aloysius is the principal of St. Nichols School, who is suspicious and always doubt everyone, especially Father Flynn. She thinks that Father Flynn is guilty, but has no proof. Sister Aloysius doesn’t like Father Flynn in the school and his ideas. She treats him unfairly. Sister Aloysius treats Father Flynn unfairly when she still accuses Father Flynn of giving the altar wine to Donald Muller after Father Flynn tells her the truth. She treats him unfairly by forcing him to request the transfer without proving if Father Flynn is guilty or not and also makes him resign by lying about his past.
Genre of Science Fiction Illustrated in Beginning of film Independence Day Films normally have a certain type of genre. A genre is formed when certain elements from a type of film or book become essential to that type of film or book. There are different type of genre likes Horror, Romance and Comedy. The film, which I am studying, is called 'Independence Day'. The genre for this film is science fiction.

Science fiction writing began in the early 1800’s as a reaction to the growth of science and technology. The genre is characterized by its intellectual excitement, high adventure, and its making of the fantastic possible. Due to the nature of science fiction, film has become an essential part of its popularity. Science fiction films have been popular since the earliest silent clips because of the outlandish visuals and creative fictional story lines that capture an audience’s attention. Under the guise of this popular platform, writers relay political, social and philosophical messages to their audience.
Exam Essay Historically, women have been excluded from combat roles. On the surface, it is because men, who have always thought of themselves better and stronger than women, believed that females could not handle the responsibility of holding a combat position and women are rupturing the socially constructed gender norms that were set in place. According to Nicole Dombrowski, “no other topic concerning women’s role in war creates as great a debate as the question of women’s active participation in combat units.” The benefits of the expansion of women’s roles in the military advantage not only the women but the military as well. In comparison, the drawbacks of expansion of women’s roles are usually disadvantages to the men within the military.
Baxter Magolda’s defines her theory of self-authorship as “the capacity to internally define a coherent belief system and identity that coordinates engagement in mutual relations with the larger world (2004, p.xxii). However, my ideal definition of self-authorship is a lifelong process in which you discover your individuality in order to create an understanding of yourself and the relationship you have with others. It is the process in which we evaluate how to define ourselves through our values, beliefs, and views of the world. It is the breakthrough point in our lives where we utilize the information we have absorbed from our childhood to creating our own understanding to reevaluate our perspective of reality.
As I thought of this article, many of the issues I have faced as a single Hmong woman in her mid-twenties came to mind. Should I discuss the functional reasons why marriage is so important in the Hmong culture, especially for women? Or do I talk about the lack of eligible, older Hmong men? Better yet, should I complain about the attempts by my relatives to find me a good husband as if it were an unfortunate circumstance that I was single instead of a conscious choice? Thinking it over, though, I decided that all those questions boiled down to one fundamental truth – the Hmong community is still trying to learn how to treat the increasing number of Hmong women who, like me, are making the choice to stay single in their mid-twenties.
The idea of Individualism can be traced all the way back to England before America’s existence. As we know, individualism has been interpreted in many forms throughout history. The 19th century is no different, taking hold of its own idea of individualism, called transcendentalism. Transcendentalism suggests freedom should not be confined to those focused on money and superficial gains. Instead, people should depend on no one but themselves. At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
Hesiod’s Theogony and the Babylonian Enuma Elish are both myths that begin as creation myths, explaining how the universe and, later on, humans came to be. These types of myths exist in every culture and, while the account of creation in Hesiod’s Theogony and the Enuma Elish share many similarities, the two myths differ in many ways as well. “The word interdisciplinary consists of two parts: inter and disciplinary. The prefix inter means “between, among, in the midst,” or “derived from two or more.” Disciplinary means “of or relating to a particular field of study” or specialization” (Repko, 2011, p. 7). I understand this to be a study that often consists of two or more areas that are being observed and examined. An interdisciplinary study is used to help us put together research by asking and answering questions, address certain issues by viewing a variety of views.
