Cuban revolutionary, Jose Marti protested law from Guatemala to Spain. His visions of how society should be, changed both literature and politics everywhere. One of his most famous works, “Our America” gave people insight to his ideal view of society.
Throughout this piece Marti uses metaphors to describe both the revolution and Cuba’s culture. Marti also uses these particular metaphors to describe the dictatorship, socio-economic status, prejudices, and the indigenous peoples of Latin America, a very important element needed to understand Cuban identity (Retamar). With Cuba under Spanish control, and under perceived potential threat of the U.S., Cuba was struggling to find its independence and identity (“Jose Marti”). Marti tried to ignite these feelings of independence and identity through this essay by creating this idea of pan-Latin American identity (Kumaraswami). In other words, he wanted to create this movement that made people consciously aware that we are all equal, and if one country is going through hard times, we all are. Although this notion was mainly for the people of Latin America, Marti wanted this unity and common identity throughout Europe and the United States as well (Kumaraswami). In my opinion, he knew he wouldn’t get support unless the bigger powers were on board so this idea was a very well thought out course of action. By using words like ‘America’ in his essay, the reader does not know who he is referring to specifically (2002). It could be South America or it could be North America. Nonetheless, residents of the United States coined the word American, so it would make sense that they would assume it was about them, a issue in its own.
