Scrutinizing Cultural Encounters In ‘In Cuba I was a German Shepherd’ and ‘The Distant Past’

Cultural encounters are defined as the interactions or the connection between two groups of people or more, where they behave according to a variety of social norms. A cultural encounter might produce ethical, political, and individual problems. It also might result in a cultural shock, which happens when an individual or a group of individuals immersed in a new culture that differs from their initial or original ones. This immersing makes them unable to adapt and acclimate and here is where a cultural shock occurs. In literary works, cultural encounters appear the most especially in short stories such as, 'The Distant Past' and 'In Cuba I was a German shepherd'. The concept of cultural encounter is the main theme in the two stories, which is awarded by the characters and the authors, and it is highlighted by the incidents and the use of contrasts in the stories.

In 'The Distant Past' the story is concentrated on the conflicts between two Irish siblings, Mr. and Miss Middleton, whom their commitment and loyalty are for the British and the Catholic townspeople who are against the Protestant British. Because of their loyalty and their relationship with the British people, the siblings had economic and social issues which made them spend the rest of their lives in sadness and loneliness. Similarly, in 'In Cuba I was a German Shepherd' the main characters suffered from loneliness after moving to America where they met new people who are totally different from their hometown people. Also, they encountered social and economic problems by being rich and then poor right after moving to America. The characters in both stories suffered from many issues which were caused by the cultural encounter, which led to their troubled lives, and here is where the similarity
