Over the past few weeks, I have learned more about grammar, punctuation, mechanics’, and Transitional words. In addition to these lessons, I have learned about active reading strategies and taking better notes. These have all allowed me to review my writing assignments with a different set of tools to improve my writing skills. This week I have select three documents that I believe demonstrates my growth as a writer.
I reread everything I wrote for English 102 and decide on the reading reflection from week one. Once I began to read it I noticed That I began my sentences very simply. For example, “I” was used at the beginning of almost every sentence. It was at that point that I realized that I learned to start my sentences a little better. Furthermore, I didn’t use a single transitional word or phrase. I wrote how I felt but my vocabulary is limited and it shows. As I progress through the course I read the lessons and textbook to develop better writing technics. Which leads me to my second selection from week 5. Comparatively, I seemed to have learned the value of transitional words and phase and was feeling more confident about my writing skills.

It was at that point that I realized that maybe my topic was too broad and I began to have doubts about the upcoming essay. Even though I felt that way I felt good about the memo. After that memo I knew was getting better and on my way to perfection. Until Week 7’s business writing reflection letter. As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.

As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
I have studied English since I was a grade seven, but the curriculum in my middle school and high school years, mainly focuses on reading and speaking components of language skills, with a little focus on writing. As a result, I never felt confident with any piece that I was asked to write. Writing has been a hurdle for me to succeed in college since most of the courses in college requires one or the other way writing skill. Consequently, I have decided to work on my writing skills, and have started working on it; even before, I started taking this English 101 class. I used to use a various educational material which I thought might help me to meet my writing goal. Some of the materials which I was using includes: TOEFL educational materials, You Tube resources, and various novels. All of these resources have helped me to polish my writing skills. Furthermore, after I started taking this class, I have learned to enjoy writing. I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. This class builds up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
While writing this essay, I realized how important it is to choose your words carefully when writing and the different strategies to use while constructing your essay. Using the different strategies can completely alter the meaning of your writing, even when writing about the exact same thing and using the same details. The strategy that I feel was most important when writing was choosing words with specific connotations. Words like “bright” and “breeze” have a connotation that evokes positive feelings, while words with similar meanings like “gaudy” and “gale” have more negative connotations that alter your view of an event. Some words have little or no emotional connotation, and these words will be less effective in creating a strong feeling in your reader.
When I transitioned into 7th grade, I was very clueless when it came to grammar and sophisticated writing techniques; little did I know how to use commas, semicolons, and transition words in a sentence. Throughout the year, not only did my grammar enhance, but also my sentence structure matured vastly. Reading my papers from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, I knew that my writing has improved.
Everyone is expected to use their writing skills either for homework or note taking. The first week of college and I'm already having up to 3 pages of notes for each class. I would like to be more organized in my writing. Although there are more things I would like to change about my writing, I'm satisfied with the way I write.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
In academic writing I am able to avoid ugly English words and complex phrases, demonstrated by my proper use of vocabulary words and simple phrases feedback from writing websites. “The language both confuses the reader, and lacks power and energy” (Grellier & Goerke, 2014, p.169). Despite having satisfactory oral and written language skills, I am keeping my language too simple and not directed at the subject topic. I add unnecessary redundant words and phrases to my writing that add nothing to the overall meaning (Dictionary, 2015). Finally, both the KISS principle and After the Deadline website identified undetermined differences between active and passive voices in complex sentences.
As a current learner, I constantly have to make adjustments as needed and repeat. My daily adjustments are editing my writing. Writing has been a continuous problem that haunts me in my sleep since I was a high school student. It's extremely difficult to not compare your writing to others and wonder how long they took on their assignments as well as how often do they edit? It is nice to know that I have access to many programs that help with editing major assignments.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
My senior year of english has been the most challenging yet the most beneficial. Some might say that writing is irrelevant to their life when in reality having the skill to writing clearly and is very important. Having the ability to write precisely can simply show a difference of a good writer from a great writer. Writing is not an easy subject to get the hang of so studying hard and writing a lot of essays in high school (that’s when we get taught proper writing skills) will for sure benefit the future. It can benefit if you are looking for a job, writing college applications and especially sending in scholarships.
Reading and writing ability development starts before a child can read and write; it begins with a child's exposure to books, paper and writing materials in the first three years of life. Reading and writing ability development includes much more than just reading, including spoken language and writing, all of which is developed through a variety of early skills. Parents and people (who take care of people) can use a mixed group of learning activities to (help increase/show in a good way) reading and writing ability development in their infants and little kids.
During the past couple of weeks in ENG120. I learn a lot during the class and going to use my skills in my future class and in my career field. I improved my skills in typing and learning my mistakes in grammar. I also learn a better way to look up research materials by going to different sources and making sure my facts were right before attempting to type a paper out.
I did not plan on taking a general education English course as I entered into college. I was confident that my IB higher-level English test scores from high school would cover the requirement, and moreover, I was sure that I didn’t need to take an entry-level composition course. I naively believed that I already knew everything that I could possibly learn in such a course. You might imagine, then, the frustration and resignation I felt when I learned that the aforementioned test scores would not in fact exempt me from taking ENGL 104. I went in to the class this semester seeing it as merely a box to check off my to-do list upon completion. Now as I’m nearing the end of the term, I’ve come to realize that I still had a lot to learn in the way of composition. I feel that the essays that I have compiled here are excellent representations of my writing, and showcase the growth that I have gone through during this semester.
