What is typography?
It is important that graphic designers understand the concept and the term of the word ‘Typography’. Typography is simply the art and technique of arranging type and also the design and use of typefaces as a movable type. It’s central to the work and skills of a designer and is about much more than making the words legible and readable. It is considered to have begun with Gutenberg and the development of moveable type. But typography has its roots in handwritten letterforms. Typography encompasses everything from calligraphy through digital type and type on Web pages. It also includes type designers who create new letterforms as well as designers and calligraphers who use the letters as part of their designs.

History

How it started
The first type of messages that we find in the history records were a series of pictures that told a story known as pictographs. From pictographs created more sophisticated ways of communicating through ideographs. Ideographs substituted symbols for pictures of events. A symbol of a star represented the heavens or a peace pipe represented peace. Native Americans and Egyptians are examples of some folks who used ideographs. Chinese characters are still based on ideographs.

From ideographs the egyptians devoloped a more pioneering illustration system called Hieroglypics. The Egyptians still used drawings to represent objects or ideas, but were the first to use objects to represent sounds.

Letter Development
At around 1200 BC, the Phoenicians declare their independence from the Egyptians and developed their own alphabet that was the first to be composed exclusively of letters.

...t trend is going to continue into 2014, and many designers are going to favor sites that promote function over form, and place a clear emphasis on simplicity, minimalist and intelligibility. With that continued emphasis on flat design comes the trend of choosing fonts that are easy to read, use clean lines, and even strokes. The fonts that will become popular due to flat design are ones that are share and crisp – but still visually interesting.
Large Type
Based on the research large type in 2014, will be a new trend. Web designers in particular will definately use this type to grab viewers attention. Falling in line with the emphasis on content over aesthetic, increasing the font size on webpages ensures that the text is clear, readable and comprehensible. Because of increased screen resolutions, the standard 12 point font is no longer as readable as it was before.
