What is typography?
It is important that graphic designers understand the concept and the term of the word ‘Typography’. Typography is simply the art and technique of arranging type and also the design and use of typefaces as a movable type. It’s central to the work and skills of a designer and is about much more than making the words legible and readable. It is considered to have begun with Gutenberg and the development of moveable type. But typography has its roots in handwritten letterforms. Typography encompasses everything from calligraphy through digital type and type on Web pages. It also includes type designers who create new letterforms as well as designers and calligraphers who use the letters as part of their designs.
History
How it started
The first type of messages that we find in the history records were a series of pictures that told a story known as pictographs. From pictographs created more sophisticated ways of communicating through ideographs. Ideographs substituted symbols for pictures of events. A symbol of a star represented the heavens or a peace pipe represented peace. Native Americans and Egyptians are examples of some folks who used ideographs. Chinese characters are still based on ideographs.

From ideographs the egyptians devoloped a more pioneering illustration system called Hieroglypics. The Egyptians still used drawings to represent objects or ideas, but were the first to use objects to represent sounds.
Letter Development
At around 1200 BC, the Phoenicians declare their independence from the Egyptians and developed their own alphabet that was the first to be composed exclusively of letters.

...t trend is going to continue into 2014, and many designers are going to favor sites that promote function over form, and place a clear emphasis on simplicity, minimalist and intelligibility. With that continued emphasis on flat design comes the trend of choosing fonts that are easy to read, use clean lines, and even strokes. The fonts that will become popular due to flat design are ones that are share and crisp – but still visually interesting.
Large Type
Based on the research large type in 2014, will be a new trend. Web designers in particular will definately use this type to grab viewers attention. Falling in line with the emphasis on content over aesthetic, increasing the font size on webpages ensures that the text is clear, readable and comprehensible. Because of increased screen resolutions, the standard 12 point font is no longer as readable as it was before.

By being educated at a young age in literacy, I included it in my pottery and also working for newspaper companies strengthened my form of expression. Working in the South Carolina Republican and then later on The Edgefield Hive as a typesetter, it was a good experience helping my literacy skills but I didn’t feel fully indulged. I did it because I had to but also to learn. By understand typography, I was able to understand the science of the anatomy of type. They taught me the use of size, spacing, and placement of typography in order to show hierarchy, direction and attraction. I became to understanding that type is a collective of shapes and strokes. This paper will argue that the industrial revolution allowed for the proliferation of fonts in the 19th century for two main reasons. First, there was an unprecedented need for new and eye-catching lettering to grab the attention of consumers a new variety of choices on the market. Secondly, the creation of new fonts was more affordable than ever due to the advancements in technology during the industrial revolution.
The earliest writing in Mesopotamia was a picture writing invented by the Sumerians who wrote on clay tablets using long reeds. The script the Sumerians invented and handed down to the Semitic peoples who conquered Mesopotamia in later centuries, is called cuneiform, which is derived from two Latin words: cuneus , which means "wedge," and forma , which means "shape." This picture language, similar to but more abstract than Egyptian hieroglyphics, eventually developed into a syllabic alphabet under the Semites (Assyrians and Babylonians) who eventually came to dominate the area.
Cuneiform Writing in the Ancient Near East 1. Writing was invented about 3100 BCE (B.C.). At this time, settlements were being established and writing became a necessity due to economics; sales of grain, animals, claims to land, etc. needed to be recorded. Reliable records had to be kept for all sorts of transactions -- animals kept in warehouses, land sales, and money paid for slaves, bills of sale, etc. Before writing was invented, clay tokens, sticks and other kinds of objects were used to keep records of household and commercial bookkeeping.
These messages from the very beginning offered new, unique views and ideas upon existing scenarios. This is has happened throughout history and is most prevalent in today’s society.

The culture of Ancient Egypt is identified and very well known for many aspects of their ways of life. Considering the time period, they were very technologically advanced. This can especially be seen through the great pyramids and hieroglyphs that elaborately decorate the walls of them. Pyramids were not small structures. In fact the largest one was over fifty stories high. In addition they were also built completely by manual labor. Labor consisted of moving limestone blocks that weighed on average 2.5 metric tons and could weigh up to 15 metric tons. In addition they had to form these blocks, move them, and sculpt them into the great structures known as the Pyramids. As you can imagine they took several decades of day in and day out work to complete these massive structures. The hieroglyphs were also an important part of not only the Ancient Egyptian culture but the pyramids especially. They provided pictorial descriptions for burial chambers, temples, jewelry, and important statues. Ways to decipher them were unknown until the discovery of what is known as the Rosetta Stone. It was a stone that showed the same text in three different languages. Then early in the 19th century a French scholar name Jean Francois Champollion was able to decipher it and later on aid in learning the language of the dead language of hieroglyphs. Hieroglyphs are still being deciphered to this day.
Like the Mesopotamians, the Egyptians also believed in god and goddesses and was one of the first to develop their unique writing system called hieroglyphics.
