DRAFT! Jaqualin S Wattimena/2013-36-044 Do Homeschool Provide Students With Enough Opportunities To Be More Socializing? Homeschooling is a one of a system of education or learning which is conducted at students’s home that becomes an interesting topic in the society. Parents have options when making decisions regarding their children’s education. Nowadays, manny parents choose homeschooling for their children beside public school, because they feel that most of learning atmosphere at public school does not prioritize the student need. The age when a childrens may stop going to school varies from sixteen to eighteen (Aasen, 2010). But actually, homeschool it is not a better choice for the children because, while those who oppose that homeschooling …show more content…
It does emphasize the importance of student socialization (Wentzel & Looney. 2007). As we know that, socialitation is the process whereby people acquire the rules of behavior and systems of beliefs and attitudes that equips a person to function effectively as a member of a particular society (Chang, Gould & Meuse, 2011). Homeschool parents are aware of the issue of socialization and are strongly committed to providing positive socialization opportunities for their children (Romanoswski, 2006, p. 126). Public school provides a better social interaction between each childrens. Homeschool there is not much scope for social interaction. In public schools, there are many of students coming from different cultures and family backgrounds, so students are sufficiently exposed to social interaction which builds their social skills and enables them to learn the proper way to communicate with others students. From the communication they have and interaction with others students, they can have many friends to help each other if they have many task to do from the teachers. Whereas, homeschool just have one or two families so they can not have a good opportunities to do the social interaction between others …show more content…
Parents have options when making decisions regarding their children’s education. Nowadays, manny parents choose homeschooling for their children beside public school, because they feel that most of learning atmosphere at public school does not prioritize the student need. But actually, the good choice to the children beside homeschooling is public schools because, it is provides a more diverse experience than homeschooling such as better social interaction. As we know that, socialitation is the process whereby people acquire the rules of behavior and systems of beliefs and attitudes that equips a person to function effectively as a member of a particular society (Chang, Gould & Meuse, 2011), feel more confidence to answer teacher’s questions. It is evident that a question is the strongest point of effective teaching which can stimulate students’ motivation, focus their attention, help their learning and thinking, and also help the teacher know how well a student’s learning is (Dillon, 1988), and not only provide a better education for children with the profesional teachers to teaching, but also provide a good achievment from the students they are teaching in public school
One main doubt that many people believe is that home schooling makes a negative approach to one’s child social skills. This is based on the supposition that children who are home schooled are trapped at home all the time. People who still suppose that children are home 365 days a year are mistaken, because home school children have several opportunities to interact with other kids their own age. According to Dr. Brian D. Ray, his studies substantiate that, homeschooled students are engaged in outside activities. They are frequently caught up in activities such as field trips, sports, etc. Homeschooled children do not only hang out with people their own age, but they learn how to socialize with people of all ages. This is a great benefit because they learn to communicate and become amiable (Ray 1).
Although the reason some families choose to home school is because they want a stronger, more personal education for their child, it has been seen that some children simply drop out of school and say that they are homeschooling, when in reality they are not studying anything since tradition education is not required in the Un...
Education - is a process of identity formation. School education is the way society can convey necessary skills and knowledges from one generation to another. However what happens, when school education conflicts with the true interest of student? It might seem from first sight that homeschooling is the best option, considering the current state of technology and globalization economy, but its arguable if it can truly substitute school.
Although opponents of home schooling claim that children who are educated at home do not develop their social skills at the same rate as their peers who attend traditional schools, research findings indicate that students who are home-schooled develop socially at the same rate as those who are traditionally schooled.
Homeschooling offers students a more time efficient education that allows the student to focus on education in which is the sole purpose for school. Homeschooling also gives the teacher a thorough evaluation of a student’s strengths and weaknesses by visually seeing what subjects they excel in and what subjects they are weak in. At this point students can increase their individual progression in each subject. Homeschooling permits control of the environment a student learns in to retain the focus of the student. This will reduce the chances of drug usage, bullying, and violence. Samuel Blumenfeld said this on the importance of homeschooling “The home is a safe haven for the children in a world awash with drugs, sexually transmitted diseases, violence, and moral corruption” (Cindy Mur et al.76). When parents come to realize that the home is the safest place for their children, then will they act as Blumenfeld concludes “I look forward to the day when the public schools will be virtually empty not because we have abolished public education but because the parents will have abandoned it” (Cindy Mur et al.
There are many ways to teach children in the world. Some children are learning at the school and others are learning at home. Homeschooling is one of the most common ways to teach children. Because of, technologies, the numbers of home schooling are increasing. Nowadays, many parents teach their children at home because they are able to use the Internet and read about anything they want. Moreover, homeschooling has different ways to teach children; it depends on the parents and the methods they teach. Some of the parents take courses to improve their knowledge about how they can educate their children and teach them new things. Some of the children like to study in a group, so parents communicate with other friend’s parents and decided to go on a trip with each other and study. Although many parents think that home schooling is beneficial for their children, students should not be homeschooled for several reasons: it is dangerous for children’s health, children will have limited education, and it does not have much quality.
It is important to note that it is a right for the children to have a quality education. In this aspect, reasonable learning environments are a critical factor contributing to children education. All parents want their children to have an access to quality and better education. In the quest for such, parents always seek learning environments with competent teachers and better learning facilities. It is therefore, common to see parents always having a choice to make between taking their children to public schools, private school or have the children taught at home. Different opinion about home schooling and public school has recently been a subject of contention. Either way, the two forms of learning should offer the learning child with a better education. Nevertheless, each of the two forms of learning environments should be supported by valid arguments as discussed below.
Thesis Statement: Homeschooled students often achieve higher academic success and are more active in their communities than traditionally schooled students, due to a personalized approach to learning that emphasizes individuality.
Families who decide to homeschool their children will have to spare much of their time to watch over their children’s progress and education, which could result in reducing the family income as one of the parents must stay home to make sure that everything is prepared and done right for their kids preventing making it impossible for both parents to be employed. Homeschooling have proven that it’s better as an educational system, but it does have some negative effects on the children, homeschool parents should expose their kids to the outside world give them the space to explore and interact with the unknown, expose to other ideas beyond their own, and let them interact with other children who are not homeschooled, they also need to teach them to question all things even the family ideas and way of living.
Homeschooled children’s personal education doesn’t get overlooked. According to “homeschooling vs. public schooling: making the right choice” in the Huffington Post, Marion Lewis states, that public schools focus on teaching the average student; which means any student above or below average doesn’t get what he/she needs. With so many students it’s no wonder many students are getting overlooked. Marion states that class sizes are too big, with class ratios being anywhere from one teacher with twenty students to a whopping thirty students to one teacher. Homeschooling helps fix this problem by having individualized education for each student. With homeschooling, the parent has the opportunity to pick out of the many curriculum options the right one to teach their child the way best suited for them. Marion also mentions how one on one teaching helps the parent (in this case the teacher) find and target the students weaknesses to help focus on fixing those weaknesses.
One might ask why some parents decide to home school their children rather than send them to public school to receive a traditional public education. In his article, “What Have We Learned About Homeschooling,” Eric Isenberg offers data which says, “Families choose to homeschool their children for both academic and religious reasons” (407). Even so, most people claim that public school offers the perfect environment for learning and developing. They argue
The school events every school year were always the highlight for me going to public school. At first I was extremely shy more like anti-social but if it wasn’t for attending public school I wouldn’t have most of the close friends I have today. I’ve realized students taking online class or furthering education from home called “homeschool” doesn’t give the same feeling as sitting in a classroom with peers who have class with you. Being Homeschooled can’t give you any possibility of connecting to peers or teachers the way public school does. In Public school with peers or teachers, you can speak to them, share tangible contact, sight them in the hallways going from class to class and enjoy school events full of everybody you see at school daily. As stated from education bugs.com, a con of home school is “It’s harder to provide social interaction”, taken from the online article Public school vs. Home school. I know no one enjoys being socially awkward, it’s like speaking
As the population in public schools increase, the problems in these schools are also on the rise. These changes are leasing to the way parents are schooling their children. Many parents are leaning towards homeschooling as a solution to this problem. This increase in homeschooling can be directly related to an increase in school violence, the offering of a lack luster curriculum, and lack of student teacher interaction.
There is also room for a better quality of learning in a home schooling setting. Parents or tutors in a home school setting do not have to waste time with administrative tasks or repeating directions. They can get down to learning and reviewing. If a child is ok with a subject, they can move on. A child who is home schooled also has the opportunity to take part in a greater number of alternative learning experiences. For example, if a parent feels that a trip to a museum will better get a point across, on the spur of the moment they can take their child. Such spontaneity would not be possible in a regular school classroom. A certain structure is expected in a public school. In home schooling, parents or tutors are free to teach using methods they deem appropriate to the situation and the student.
Socialization is the process of passing down norms, customs, and ideologies that are important to the society by the previous generations to the younger generations. The school system is a social agency that was created to enhance the processes of socialization through education. The importance of school as an agent of socialization can be best explained by the amount of time students spend in school and in activities happen around school. The manifest functions of school are to educate students the social norms, and the knowledge and skills that help them become economically productive in order to benefit the society. But students not only learn from the academic curriculum but they also benefit from socialize with their teachers and peers.
