Solar energy is the energy that we get from sun. Solar energy is most readily source of energy. It does not belong to anybody and hence it is free. It is the most important non-conventional source of energy because it is non-polluting and therefore helps in reducing greenhouse effect.
Solar energy is used since prehistoric times. In 1970s after the rise in oil prices, several countries began to formulate many research and development programs to use solar energy more efficiently.

In India, agencies like the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency and the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources are making a programme to use solar energy in many households in the next few years. However, for this programme to be successful, the people’s initiative is very important.
India is the country with long days and plenty of sunshine like in Thar Desert. This zone, receives abundant solar energy and it is suitable for harnessing solar energy for a number of applications. Areas which receive similar intensity of solar radiation, solar energy could be easily harnessed in such areas. In India, Solar thermal energy is being used for heating water for both industrial and domestic purposes.
Solar power is just as practical in populated areas connected to the local electrical power grid as it is in remote areas.
