Sacred groves are grove of trees or several acres of forests that set up and controlled by local communities. They have special religious importance to various cultures throughout the world, especially to Celtic, Baltic, Germanic, ancient Greek, Near Eastern, Roman, Slavic, Indian, and Japanese cultures. Today, sacred groves are mostly presented in United States of America, India, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Nigeria, and Ghana. There are three types of sacred groves: temple groves, groves near burial or cremation grounds, and traditional sacred groves that located at places where village deities reside and protect the community; local people believe that any kind of disturbance or upsetting local deities will offend them and cause diseases, natural calamities or failure of crops. Sacred groves provide survival resources for the local community hence they are controlled and protected by the community, for example, hunting grounds and logging are usually prohibited, non-timber products like honey and medicinal plants are allowed to be collected by the community.
