MEDIA: Media is lifeline of the nation. It provides not only information but by other features also keeps him informed of developments, national and international. Media’s reach and the effects it can have on general public had always been recognized and they have never been challenged. Thomas Jefferson’s Words: “If it were left on me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without government, I should not hesitate to choose the latter.” So in my opinion it’s the media which is more important. Democracy: Democracy is a form of governments in which every individual can participate and share his/her views. Concept of “Freedom of Press” is also under discussion especially in the developing countries. Discussing electronic media in Pakistan, we come to know that there is a single state owned channel “PTV”. Rest is owned by certain elites like: GEO, ARY etc. The government has a separate department PEMRA which deals with the media organizations. Media nowadays cannot be called the “tamed-instrument” because it’s no longer under the government control. PTV is the only channel which cannot go against or speak against the government as it is a government funded channel. PEMRA has set some rules and regulations which are barely followed by someone. Certain benefits are given by the government to the private channels if they work in favor of the government or else they are deprived of it. Government tries to purchase the loyalty of affluent and influential journalists. Some big amounts of money or other perks are offered to them so that they speak in the ruling party’s favor. Examples can be of the GEO TV and Mubashir Lucman in the current sit-in by Pakistan Tekreek-e-Insaf. Well it might not be true but it’s the public opinion and you cannot judge by saying if it’s false or
