The decision to pursue masters in engineering management has not happened suddenly. Over the past 5 years, several aspects of my studies and work built the passion and interest in the field. I enjoyed my engineering education in general and did fairly well. However, I particularly excelled in courses that dealt with management, communications and humanities. The following graph shows the overall picture. After my undergraduate studies, I decided to gain expertise in management but I also did not want to lose my technology edge as I loved both disciplines. I got offers from Accenture (Fortune 500) and Wipro (Top 4 IT companies in India) in my campus itself (offer letters enclosed). However, as both were purely technical jobs, I rejected and pursued further studies in techno-management. I pursued a certificate program in Business Analytics and Optimization (http://insofe.edu.in/init/default/cee_program_features), which combined business, math and data sciences and fuelled my interest for further exploration of business world with engineering tools. I am currently working for a start-up (Acme Analytics) where I am involved in social media marketing and business analysis. I chose this job though the company is the smallest amongst all the offers I got, as I get to directly report to the CEO of the company. I can talk of a couple of projects that showcase my business and technical skills in solving real world problems. I have already been introduced to some topics from a few of the courses like ISE 530 (Introduction to Operations Research) and ISE 527 (Quality Management for Engineers) during my certification program, and it would be quite exciting to study them at a much deeper level. I found Dr. Settles’s research in engineering management and quality management and Dr. Winterfeldt’s research in decision analysis and risk analysis highly interesting and matching my interests. My educational background, work experience and the personality I built through other activities gives me the confidence that I can excel in the graduate program.
