During high school years, letter grading is helpful because it tells the scholars if they are doing well or bad in a class. The letter score should not be replaced with pass and fail because the letter grading is better. The students would not work as hard to excel in their studies because they would not have a standard to work towards. The undergraduate student would not want to do their work because if the students get a bad grade on an assignment. The student will fail the class. The letter grade will help the students see how they are doing in the class. When a student does not have a standard to work towards it makes it easier for the student to fail because there is nothing between pass and fail. The letter grade is a better system to use because a student can set a goal to reach. If the pass and fail system is used than students would not know how they passing or failing. The reason why the letter grade system is better because it tells the students how they are doing in the class. For example, in a class with the letter grade, if the students have a D in the class, he or she can work on the grade to get it to a passing grade like an A or B. The letter grade explains more. According the three leading effects of grading outlined in Kohn’s paper, the number one effect of grading is “grades tend to reduce students' interest in being taught.” I would agree with his argument grading and testing puts pressure on getting excellent grades and takes the focus off understanding and on “performing” acceptably. In today’s society we feel the need to be graded in order to learn. The topic of the grading system has sparked three essays, by three different authors, about the pros and cons of the grading system. First, Jerry Farber, professor at University of California at San Diego, wrote A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System (333). Next is Steven Vogel, professor at Denison University, who wrote Grades and Money (337). The last two authors in this compilation are Stephen Goode and Timothy W. Maier. They both are journalists for Insight on the News. While each of these authors have their own point of view on the grading system, all three essays talk about how being graded affects learning.
Sending the children home with these inaccurately given F’s would result non positive results at home as well. There is a large percentage of student that come from a single parent home, and some even with no parents being raised by grandparents. I believe that Institutions in America should use the grade scale rather than the pass-fail scale. I believe that to motivate students to do work, practice work needs to be worth more than 10% of a students’ grade. Ideally, I believe the grading scale should be closer to 75% knowledge, and 25% practice. I believe this would help students want to do their work because practice work is worth much more than 10%. If the students do not do any practice work, they can end up with a C, which in many cases is deemed average. Also, those who do their practice work well can use practice assignments to bring up bad test scores. Due to this, more students will do well on their practice work, therefore leading to better scores in tests because students are trying on practice work and they are doing work. Those on the school board may think that 75/25 would be too much weight on practice work, due to this I also think an 80/20 grading scale would be a good option.
