Introduction to gemology Introduction Good evening. I am Sérgio Jaensch and today I am going to introduce you to a Geology field of study called Gemmology. This is a Mineralogy branch that studies the gemmological materials, these being natural or manmade ones. The importance of the study of these materials is that they are culturally important since the beginning of human life, as being related with the creeds or being related with commercial interests. In this science not only the physical and chemical properties of the gems are studied, but the techniques to identify and evaluate the gems, the methods to synthetize and to treat them and the cut and polish procedures are Gemmology subjects of study too. To start let’s define what is a Gemstone. A Gemstone, or gem, can be defined as a material that have some physical property (as example colour or lustre) that justifies its use as an adornment. The Natural Gemstones can be minerals, as emerald and diamond, amorphous substances, as opal and volcanic glass, organic substances, as coral and amber or it can be properly rocks as the ones rich in sodalite and turquoise. The Synthetic gemstones always have a natural equivalent and are made through synthetizing processes and have almost all the characteristics identic to their natural equivalent. Some examples are the synthetic ruby and emerald. The Artificial gemstones have no natural equivalent and its main example is the cubic zircon that is visually similar to the diamond but has a huge chemical
