People also as the article suggested, want conditional positive regard; This is the sense that you will be valued and loved only if you behave in a way that is acceptable to others (Hockenbury, Nolan & Hockenbury, 2016). This is a good example of why people want to receive likes and followers on media pages such as twitter, Facebook and Instagram. This is because individuals ranking goes up through each like making the individual feel accepted. The last and most important piece social influence. Social influence is the effect or situational factors and other people on an individual’s behavior, that is motivated by the desire to gain social acceptance and approval(Hockenbury, Nolan & Hockenbury, 2016). For example; people join social media pages because they want others to like them or think that they are a good influence/ role model. This relates with the article because they know that the higher number of people following an individual the more attraction that person or business will receive. Another example; the reason that this article exists is because of this influence, people conform to what society wants, so if Facebook is socially excepted as the new way of ranking higher than another, it is only a matter of time until this influence will reach to everyone creating a Facebook
Modern technology is a huge cause on why people have started to care a lot of what other people think of them. Now we have all of these new social media sites and apps such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. All of these websites and apps have likes, follows or comments. All
The novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley first published in 1932, presents a very bleak out look of what future society will be like. The novel presents a future of where almost total conformity is a carefully guarded aspect of society. Even before one is "decanted" they are conditioned to fill a specific roll and to act a certain way.
In Clayton Pangelinan’s essay, “Social Networking: Why It’s Really So Popular”. She gives insight to how people crave social interaction whether it be in person or online. Pangelinan explains how everyone wants to feel acknowledged and connected. Although it is true that social media is used to fulfill a need for validation, it does not mean that everything one does on social media is not genuine. When utilized positively social media can play a huge part in developing social movements.
I think to be a public figure it requires more than a certain number of followers or likes. Social media it’s another way of entertainment. But not everything we read on it it’s true.
Conformity and Its Meaning This assignment focuses upon conformity and what it means to us. Conformity is defined by Zimbardo (1992) as "A tendency for people to adopt behaviour, values and attitudes of other members of a reference group". Why people conform is a topic of much debate. People don't always conform for the same reason's, in 1958 Kelman identified three main forms of conformity, each of which could produce conforming behaviour but in different ways.
In society, it is natural for humans to associate with groups that share the same beliefs and or political views. We as humans find comfort in conforming to the social norm of a group or society. But, following this trend of conformity consequently causes people to blindly follow others, even if those supporting the cause do not entirely understand the true nature of the group they have associated with.
No one in the world is exactly alike; everyone has different interest, dress differently, think differently and learn differently, not even identical twins are the same. Yet, in our schools systems today the sense of individuality is being destroyed in the students, even with the two goals aimed to better individuals as well as the society they live in. Public schools are trying to conform everyone into learning the same way and thinking the same way resulting in multiple adolescents to fall behind.
The question of individualism vs. conformity comes to mind when dealing with the human psyche. Some people value being independent and self-sufficient, while some like to keep themselves in the confines of conformity. The American society tends to lean towards the conformist point of view and it is mostly due to the effects of media. Americans crave the idea of association and strive to become the individuals that the media deems worthy. Conformity is a quality that is present in the hierarchy of American society. It brings a psychological feeling of correlating with a group and creates the notion of liberation from solitude.
According to Blease, 2015 the trend Facebook users tend to possess is the “famous for being famous” model. Simply meaning the theory behind having a Facebook and incurring a large number of likes will contribute to a boost in confidence and have more attention directed towards the person. Facebook is also seen as a form of impression management, due to users competing for likes on statuses and pictures, while comparing it to others (Blease, 2015). This could also go wrong when comparing and competing is not going in the favor of users it could make one feel like a loser (Blease, 2015). Many users will typically, post about the positive aspects of his or her life, due to wanting to portray a positive persona (Chen and Lee, 2013). From personal observations many people create an unrealistic profile different from the actual person he or she truly is. The reason is to convey an interesting life, gain popularity and to impress others. Things have reached a point to where most personal profile is fakes. When trying to understand the logic behind such behaviors most people never admit to the real reason behind their doings. The lack of privacy also has to do with impression
Social media has taken over the world of communication and has changed the ways in which we communicate on a daily basis. It is extremely influential on our lives because of how easily we are able to access these mediums of communication. I’m intrigued by the effects that social media has on people’s perceptions of their self-worth. Almost all of the social networking sites seem to measure, at least to some extent, the popularity level or status of its users. All have a number of ‘followers’ or ‘friends’ which if there’s a high number of followers or friends that seems to elevate a person’s popularity level or their online status. This in turn could make their self-esteem or ego rise, whereas if their follower level is low it may disappoint or aggravate that user. All of these sites also offer areas where followers can ‘like’ pictures or posts, ‘comment’ on these pictures/posts, ‘share’ the post, and what have you. How important are ‘likes’ and whatnot to our actual self-esteem? Do we value online popularity the same way or more than we value real-life interactions? How could this affect the mental health of those who use these networking sites? Is this kind of online community promoting more narcissistic persons in the community? So many questions… I’m not alone in asking these questions. I’m convinced that social media has a negative influence on the self-esteem of its users.
Their availability on social networks makes news more accessible. From a motivational perspective, people use social networks to fulfill a variety of social needs, including association, self-expression, and self-presentation. Consequently, using a social network can enhance self-esteem and positively affect well-being (Gonzales and Hancock 2011; Valkenburg, Peter, and Schouten 2006).... ... middle of paper ...
Furthermore, browsing sites such as Facebook may lead to low morale, as people begin to measure their self-worth with the amount of “likes” they receive. Ironically, although social media sites boast their ability to connect people, they mainly separate society even more as people become isolated behind their screens. Social media is damaging to a person’s life because it can lower self-esteem, isolate people from real relationships, and cause privacy concerns as marketers, employers, and school officials can view information posted online.
The use of social networking has both its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is “an Internet social network can help you connect with other people who share your interest, and find resources to ga...
Our society depends on knowledge. A new way to communicate this knowledge quickly is through social media (The Power of Social Media 1). Learning through social networking is very useful because the participant can learn the things he wants at the rate he desires (The Power of Social Media 1). Several social media sites have become largely popular, like Facebook and Twitter. With new sites being created year round, it is quite obvious that social networking sites will be prevalent for a while (The Growth of Social Media 1). The main reason social media has become so common is because of its quick access. Anyone can know virtually anything he desires if enough time and effort are put into finding that info (The Power of Social Media 1). Knowledge alone has a very powerful aspect (The Power of Social Media 1). As humans, we long for a sense of knowledge because we are curious beings. People want to know what is going on around them. Not only does knowledge provide a sense of satisfaction, it also expands our options. (Phoenix 1). The more options there are, the more freedom a pers...
Social networking sites like Facebook can have both negative and positive effects. Facebook can leave us feeling like we are not good enough if we don’t have enough likes on our pictures or if we do not have a certain amount of friends. While on the other hand it can make us feel empowered and worthy when we have a significant amount of likes on our picture and thousands of friends on Facebook. The following two articles argue whether or not social networking sites like Facebook, have a negative or positive effect on one’s overall well-being. As the old saying goes, there are always two sides to everything.
