Computer Technology In Literacy Education Technologies have dramatically changed the diverse fields of our lives in terms of business, education, and culture. This development of technology has influenced a shift in the educational environment and pedagogy from traditional language education to technological language education, such as Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). Especially, a few decades ago, Literacy education had not applied educational technology in language pedagogy because the earlier popular teaching methods focused on direct instruction. Students can search and read interesting information on the Internet. On the Internet, they can approach the authentic materials easily as well as also using their textbook. Teachers can create more active instruction with a reading content by using the Internet. Case and Truscott (1999), cited in Green (2005, p.57), note that “students have been able to improve their sight word vocabularies, fluency, and comprehension. Many English language classes have depended on simple paper materials or textbooks. These simple materials cannot make learners’ as interested and are less authentic and creative resources that those based on the Internet. Textbooks do not involve plenty of visual or audio information. Computer based reading tasks can facilitate students to understand what they are learning and the English instructions. For example, a storytelling program as computer based reading instruction also allows for increased interaction with texts, attention to individual needs, and increased independence through an ability to read texts they would not otherwise be able to read.
