Immigration has been a political debate and a family issue for many years here in the United States. An approximate amount of 11 million families here in the United States are undocumented and have come here to get a better opportunity in education for their children or to seek a place of refuge. Today, there are people in this world who do not know the struggle these families go through and they believe they should be sent back to “where they belong”. This is an important issue in our community because they resemble past experiences from the 20th century, like the holocaust, but also, immigrant families should receive the same amount of respect no matter what language they speak or their color. Dehumanization is when you are stripped of the title “human being”and re given a name such as illegal, horrific animal.. Etc. An example of this is demonstrated in the book, Night by Elie Wiesel. According to the text, “Men were hurling themselves against each other, trampling, tearing at and mauling each other. Beasts of prey unleashed, animal hate in their eyes.” (Wiesel 101) This shows that when the Jews were with the SS officials, they would play with them by throwing bread at tem and they would fight each other for that miniscule peace. This would end up with people killing each other just like animals do. Today, this is represented by people such as those who hate immigrants and decide to call them drug dealers or illegal immigrant. According to Thinkprogress.org, “In a 2005 memo, Republican strategist Frank Luntz called on the GOP to publicly use the term “illegal immigration” as a way to push for border security… For advocates, the terms are dehumanizing. “You are inherently criminalizing them as wrong, as other, as not right,” Alida Garcia, the director of coalitions & policy at the immigrant advocacy group Fwd.us, told ThinkProgress.” (Thinkprogress.org). This quote describes how today, people think it is okay to call people of different descent words such as illegal immigrants, aliens and such sorta like that without thinking about what the person might feel like. This is an act of dehumanization because people are not considering how others would feel about those words and don’t care about what might happen. They believe it is the right thing to say and don’t think twice about the meaning of the words. In all , the act of dehumanization is a problem in our community and should not be brought upon anyone no matter what they look like or what they do because it is senseless act done by our
