Living in an illusion can be both harmful and damaging to life and relationships. This is a very unhealthy lifestyle to be apart of. Instead of accepting reality as it really is, these victims tried to live in their own illusions inside of his or her’s head. This lifestyle led to destructive decisions and choices that were regretful in the long run. Ethan, Mattie, and Zeena were all trapped in an illusion, most likely because of severe depression. This illusion was a means of escape from their difficult lives and an easy way out, although this way of living ended up being more destructive than intended. Living in an illusion ultimately is unhealthy and destructive as demonstrated through Zeena isolating herself, Ethan and Mattie falling "in love", and Ethan and Mattie attempting suicide.

Everyone, at some time in life, will experience fear. But, often fantasies are created in one's mind to escape that fear. Ethan Frome uses his fantasy as an escape to the entrapment of his marriage and the fear of public condemnation.
“Left Neglect…is a real neurological syndrome that occurs due to damage to the right hemisphere of the brain, such as might follow a right-hemisphere stroke” (Genova 323). Lisa Genova, author of “Left Neglected”, explores the bewildering neurological disorder of Left Neglect through the eyes of Sarah Nickerson. Sarah is a multi-tasking champion who holds a prestigious position as the vice president of human resources at Berkley Consulting, is a mother of three kids, and a wife to her husband Bob Nickerson, who also holds a prestigious position at another company. Life for Sarah is hectic, fast paced, and constantly moving. If it isn’t something regarding work, then it’s her children, or other priorities that seem to pile up as Sarah moves through out her life. Her fast paced life comes to a sudden halt, as one day she is apart of a severe car accident. Sarah’s next memory is waking up in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and learning that she has suffered an injury to her brain that has caused a condition known as Left Neglect, and this is where Sarah’s journey throughout the novel begins.
Over the past weeks we have learned a lot of new things. I learned about different races, ethnicities, and cultures. The world would not be the same if everyone was the same race and it is a great thing to learn about everyone and where they are from, and where they have come from. Everyone is different in their own way and it is our duty to accept everyone as a whole. I am going to talk about the social construct of race today, some of our readings, and a lot of our discussions that are always fun.
“The Illusionist” is a short story by Steven Millhauser, which was adapted into a movie directed by Neil Burger in 2008 which both take place in Vienna. The short story’s plot revolves around Eisenheim and his relationship between himself and the state, which is still featured in the movie. Eisenheim’s illusions also cause him a bit of trouble; in the short story the cause of trouble is an illusion, which produces two spirits by the name of Rosa, Elis, and a boy who appears to be no older than eight. In the movie adaptation, the final straw that causes the Crown Prince to finally pursue persecution of Eisenheim is the illusion that again, produces a spirit, which turns out to be his dead fiancée. Because of Inspector Uhl’s growing obsession of Eisenheim, throughout the movie and the short story, it further ignites the blur between what is the reality and what is his illusion. Uhl’s obsession over Eisenheim and his illusions helps blur the reality around him.

The message of Richard Bach’s Illusions is based on the concept that the things we interpret in the world as reality are actually illusions. This is made evident to one of the main characters, Richard, through his interactions with his newly found friend, Donald Shimoda. Donald Shimoda is a “messiah”, and he has gifts that he uses to help mankind. A quote that Richard reads is “Here is a test to find whether your mission on earth is finished: If you’re alive, it isn’t” (121). During the entire story, Don proves this quote to be true. Donald works to share his gifts and carry out his mission on earth.
Now in the short essay, “Us and them”, David Sadaris features great examples of how one’s culture truly molds the way one views the world and how it then affects them in life. In the text Sadaris states, “We never spoke, but I’d pass them in the halls from time to time and attempt to view the world through their eyes” (Page). For Sadaris, this was nearly impossible. In the beginning of his story he explains the black and white contrast between the Tomkey’s and his own family. He talks about his relationship with television and how it was a part of daily life, while the Tomkey’s on the other hand didn’t own a television, let alone even believed in it. Not to mentions the families’ two differences with Halloween or simply the way either family would eat their dinners. This all relates back to the quote and Sadaris’s big misunderstanding with the Tomkey’s. He couldn’t understand due to the lack of knowledge he had about living the way the Tomkey’s did. However, because illusion shows his fantasy as a surge of strength out of weakness and reality shows this creation as desperation to escape life. We can never really tell the difference between the two. Bierce’s ability to blur reality and illusion makes the reader reflect on their own existence. To emphasize for readers the confusion of Farquhar’s reality and illusion helps readers better understand what actually exists and what is fantasy in life.

If they find out, he or she will be extremely angry and there is a chance that the friendship will be in ruins. Lying can ruin the world, as seen by the omission of the goddess Lilith and stereotypes. Finally, excessive lying can lead to a decreased self-value. Eventually you will begin to delude yourself, and find it nearly impossible to escape the never-ending cycle of lies. Ericsson incorporates these feelings of little to no self-value in the last section of her essay when she speaks of delusion and her conclusion. Her main argument is that little lies can turn into large lies, and can cause a sort of cultural cancer. She appeals to the audience through the use of self-worth in an effort to further appeal to her audience.
Memories cripple the consciousness of reality. People’s perception evolved within illusions and memories, thus reflects identity. The mind can both function to forget and remember. Are memories something we have or something we have lost? A memory that is being stored often deviates from the memories being recollected. People tend to say that memories last forever. But can those memories in a persons mind be always so true or accurate enough for the story to be behold? Not every memory that people remembers are accurate. Memories may form falsely and unconsciously at times. Genuine or fake, people are still able to make the memory out of something that occurred within their lives. Memories can be distorted and re-invented that leads to the likelihood of creating the false memories minted in the mind.
The myth about the brain is that, it controls the mind. Also people that the mind is the activity of the brain. However, both statements are untrue. I believe that there is a relationship between the brain and the mind forming a triangle of well- being for an individual. In my opinion, the brain is the passive path of existence because every information from the external environment produce a response either internally or externally without analysis. The brain transfers these information into our consciousness, but the active mind which analyzes the information and pays attention to both the benefits and disadvantages of the information before making choices about whether to listen or not. The paradox of reality is constantly being altered by the minds of the public. Reality as a definition is "the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them." However, what is reality? Everyone has his or her own opinion and view of what is in front of them. The stories reviewed in this section are prime examples on how ones view can dramatically change the conditions they are surrounded with. Whether it is being trapped in their own state of mind or a personal reflection on another's life changing event. The reality of these situations is perceived differently and in some cases hard to piece together as to what is real and what is not.
Reality is the state of being real or actual, whereas an illusion is a mental misinterpretation of what is believed to be true. Illusions often prevent people from perceiving reality and objective truths, which consequently results in delusions, and in some cases, tragedies. In Macbeth, a play written by William Shakespeare, the theme of illusion versus reality is overtly evident in the main character, Macbeth. Macbeth frequently misinterprets illusions as the actual reality due to possessing such an untamed ambition, which ultimately ends up resulting in a series of tragic and horrific events, for Macbeth and his victims. Macbeth’s ambition first leads him into believing that he is destined to become King of Scotland, which results in Duncan’s death. Macbeth’s ambition then affects his mental health, which causes him to mistake his hallucinations for reality, eventually resulting in further detrimental acts. Finally, Macbeth’s ambition blinds him into living a life of delusion, which causes him to reach his peak of arrogance and optimism, resulting in even further detriment and ultimately his very fall. Just as ambitions are incredibly illusive and detrimental in Macbeth, they can also be incredibly illusive and detrimental in our actual, modern day society.
Perception is a manner of selecting, organizing, and interpreting people, objects, events, situations, and or activities. The movie “Inside Out” is a perfect example of how perception affects our communication; it shows exactly how the process of selection, organization, and interpretation correlated to each other.
For many years, psychologists have been interested in the Theory of Mind (ToM) and its effects on non-human animals and also humans. Theory of Mind is referred to ‘the ability to attribute mental states – beliefs, knowledge, intentions, desires’ and so on. (Hewson et al, 2015) The Theory of Mind has been researched widely from many different psychologists, although ones mentioned in this essay are solely related to non-human animals. This essay will be describing research studies and explain how they have helped psychologists understand ToM.
