In the Great Gatsby, Scott Fitzgerald portrayed a loving story with a tragic ending which revealed the wickedness and ignorance of the society. Gatsbt's generosity and politeness contrast sharply with Tom's egoism. While Gatsby was striving to get what he wants, Tom simply used his wealth to manipulate the world and deceived those who he doesn't care. Though Gatsby is not innocent, Tom did more evil things which finally destroyed other people's lives. First of all, Gatsby is a very good example of the "new money". He came from a poor family in North Dakota and started to work for Dan Cody at 17. Although he was poor, he used some tactics that learned from the riches to chase Daisy. After coming back from the WW1, he was disappointed due to “I've gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things. have you ever read the ' The Rise of the Colored Empires'? It's a fine book and everyone ought to read it. It's scientific stuff, it's all been proven" (Fitzgerald 17). This book claims that other colored races will take over the white races eventually and people need to do something to avoid this. Tom’s blinkered view shows his ignorance, but he considered himself as an intellectual because he went to Yale for university. Also, when he first heard about Gatsby, he said ‘Who is this Gatsby anyhow, Some big bootlegger’ (Fitzgerald 69). Because he is from old money, he always refers to the new money as “bootleggers”.He does never believe that Gatsby went to Oxford, at the apartment in New York, he questioned Gatsby "I heard you, but I’d like to know when" (Fitzgerald 236). This conflict shows Tom's patronizing attitude towards Gatsby lower education.He always makes the situation worse and embarrassed by using harsh sentences, this kind of person does not care about how do others feel. Tom considers women as toys or possessions instead of people who have emotions and feelings. His possessiveness ruined other people's lives. When Tom took Mrytle to the apartment that he owned in the New York City, Mrytle get drunk and talked about Tom's marriage which mentioned Daisy's name, Tom get furious because of her outburst and broke her nose. Gatsby is very generous, he is willing to give others a helping hand, he provided Nick a well - paid job to show his gratitude towards Nick for bringing Daisy to meet him. He is always faithful to Daisy, he didn't have any relationships with other women even when he became rich. At the apartment in the New York City, Gatsby had an argument with Tom and he got mad at the end, he shout at Tom "Your wife doesn't love you,She's never loved you. She loves me" (Fitzgerald 238). His love is determined even he knows that his enemy is a wealthy and masculine man. He never has any prejudices to the others. When Nick first moved to the West Egg, he was a poor young man who has a lot of troubles in his life. However, Gatsby didn't scorn him, he invited Nick to visit his house and attend his private party. He was being nice to everyone surround
