Think about your favorite book, now think about what makes it good. I think about the realistic elements and how the author tries to make you imagine that happening to you, unlike in little kid books. In the book If I Stay by Gayle Forman the realistic elements and events that don’t happen to much people, but Gayle Forman mainly uses examples of realistic elements to empathize the main character, in this case Mia. Although this isn’t a normal thing that happens to normal people, who knows? Mia wasn’t expecting it, I bet you weren’t either.
One significant realistic event that happens in the book If I Stay is when Mia finds herself and her family in a car crash (Forman 16). Millions of people die in car crashes or accidents each year. Just like how some car accidents can be catastrophic, Mia’s entire life changed in a blink of an eye. As soon as Mia finds herself, she realizes that nothing will ever be the same. Losing family is most likely the worst thing that can happen to you, including what happened to Mia’s parents is just upsetting, but the fact that Mia had to see her non existent parents split into pieces lying on the road is discouraging. Many people lose their family when they are around forty to fifty years old, but Mia lost them when she was seventeen. Losing family is hard for everyone, people often get dehydrated from crying and can lead to depression, but when Adam and her grandparents told her what happened, Adam described Mia’s reaction as if it felt like she already knew what happened before, just like could just read her expression.
