Every person has their own identity that forms who they are. Many people think that identity is a form of an ID, but identity is more than a collection of traits, skin or body parts. Identity is always a historical idea, but it is also a pattern for a way of thinking. After reading chapter 5 on “Identities and Perceptions,” I learned that everyone has multiple identities that are transacted through communication, but at the same time it also defines who you are as a person. Chapter 5 also demonstrates perception, which is someone’s perspective or point of view. For example, I describe myself as a “bi-racial young lady”; therefore, my perception is more likely to be influenced by my race or gender.

For instance, we perform our own culture when we communicate with other people. Therefore, I think these two chapters were assigned together because they explain how our culture defines our identities, whether it is personality, relationships, or characteristics. Culture and identity play a major role in communication because everyone that you come in contact with will share different characteristics. For instant, whenever I work with my classmate Dorcas. A few weeks ago Dorcas and I had to do a group activity in psychology class that involved Howard Gardner eight theory of intelligence. After the activity came to the end, we had to talk about our strongest and weakest part. I found that Dorcas had a lot of weakness in many areas due to the fact that she came from a smaller country, that didn 't associate in certain areas of intelligence; such as music, kinesthetic, and many more. But for me being an American, I am expose to different criteria of intelligence; such as music “Knowing how to play and teach music,” kinesthetic “being a cheerleader in middle and high school,” and etc. From this group activity, it pointed out our characteristic traits, our culture differences, and also our incite on how we view each other as a
