I have recently finished reading the second third of the book titled “The Pole” written by Eric Walters. This book is about a young boy named Danny who is on an adventure of a lifetime. I had finished reading up until Danny and the crew reached Cape Sheridan and started to unload from the ship. The last part that I read was when the Danny and Captain Bartlett were making their way to the camp site and Danny fell through the ice. I was on the edge of my chair as soon as I read that Danny fell through the ice. I really wanted to know what happened next. In the next part of the book there was much more action and drama and I really enjoyed it.
Danny fell right through the ice and he started to panic. He started yelling for help but the Captain just stood still and stared at Danny. Danny remembered what the captain had told him about not panicking and staying calm. Captain Bartlett started to laugh when Danny found out that the water was only 5 inches deep. He gave Danny a hand and helped him out of the freezing water. As they reached the camp site Danny changed into warmer clothes and hurried inside and had a warm drink. Over the next few days at the camp site it was very calm and relaxed as everyone was still settling in and getting used to their new homes. As the day progressed the Captain called Danny into his hut. Danny was nervous and worried about why he had been called to meet with the Captain. He did not do anything wrong and he obeyed the messages he was told. As he entered the Captain’s hut he was asked to have a seat and was offered a hot drink. ...tter. I have also faced that feeling of being double minded about an issue in life, but not necessarily in the wilderness. There are always situations when my mom or my dad asks me to bike to the store and get something for them. Before I leave the house they explain what I need to get and how it will look. As I leave the house I am very confident that I will be able to find the right item. When I arrive at the store I am looking for the item. In most cases there is a complication because I find two different products that look very similar to what my parents described. I am always very scared about choosing the wring item and having to come back to the store and returning it. In some cases I buy both the items because I am really not sure which one is the right item. I have really enjoyed reading this book so far and I really encourage others to read it as well.
It was our fifth day in the Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico, the halfway point of the trek. I as the Crew Leader was responsible for the other 11 members of the crew, including 4 adults. I was in charge, and amazingly the adults rarely tried to take over, although they would strongly advise me what to do in some situations. Phil, with the exception of me, the oldest scout and the Chaplain for the trip, was my second. Together we dealt with problems of making sure everyone carried the right amount of stuff in their pack to who had to cook and cleanup each day. The trip had gone well so far, no injuries, and the worst problem had been a faulty backpack. As I walked I thought about the upcoming campsite. Supposedly this one had running water from a solar powered pump—so had the last night’s site but the tank was too low to use for anything but cooking because the of how cloudy it had been of late. But today was bright and shinny, and hot, so I didn’t think there would be a problem.
The boys were called out to help shovel free a troop train trapped by snow-blocked tracks. The experience "brings the war home" for all of them, and they realized they would have to face a crucial decision very soon.
We hit a down hill point so we grabbed drift wood. It would save man power and be faster to sled down. The rest helped Landon out the most because he was the smallest so he didn 't have energy left to use. But this refreshed him so we could keep going. Time was not on are side. The only thing keeping us alive was the fact that if we got out we would be the first ones ever to make it out not dead. It was about the hottest point in the day now and we had to find shade or we would get to dehydrated and die. We drank all the water we had just to fine out that we had a under ground stream below
In conclusion, double consciousness has many different effects on different types of people. Sometimes double consciousness can be used for one’s advantage for the better or even the worst. One must still be true to who they are so they will not be blinded by what society thinks he should
It was very strange to see another human/carriage on the ice. It was a shock to the crew to see a single man on a sled dragged by dogs through the Northern Sea. Comparing to a well equipped ship, the sled looked like a deadly ride. As mentioned earlier, you could only see the endless ice surrounding them and they couldn?t believe that a single man would travel far from the Big Land. However, the man on the sled was a gigantic stature and most likely he was a strong and brave man.
Each one of the boats took off, one-by-one, with George Washington leading the way through the icy waters. After moving only a few feet, we had to use our paddles to break ice blocking our passage. I could here the exhausted, scratchy groans of the other soldiers struggling to move their boats only a few feet.This continued on for awhile longer until finally, we were able to make it to the other end of the river. From the end of the river on, it was a still 19 miles of land to be traversed until we reached the Hessian’s camp. I was dead tired just from crossing the river, and I knew that me, as well as the other soldiers, would be in for a rough
Canada was widely acknowledged as the “Land of Opportunities” and “Land of Plenty”, and the country have attracted millions of immigrants throughout history. The 1950s had been the post-war period of World War Two and was a decade of radical changes in Canadians’ lifestyles. After World War Two, Europe became undesirable for people to live in due to massive war losses and damages. On the other side of the world, North America was not affected by any damage from World War II, instead, it benefited from the war as its economy flourished. Positivity spread through most of the country as automobiles, and televisions became a part of Canadians’ lifestyle.
Cognitive dissonance can be described as the feeling of discomfort resulting from holding two conflicting beliefs. It can also be said to be the mental conflict that occurs when beliefs or assumptions are contradicted by new information. A well-known psychologist Leon Festinger (1919–89), introduced this concept in the late 1950s where he proved that, when confronted with challenging new information; most people are observed to preserve their current understanding of the world by rejecting or avoiding the new information or by convincing themselves that no conflict really exists in one way or the other (Festinger, 04).

Jim Kellum, tells the story of when he was a teen in the Boy Scouts. He learned to survive in the wilderness and how to withstand the cold harsh temperatures. Later on when he was in the armed forces, he and another man were deployed to the Russian tundra to guard a downed bomber. Their instructions were to keep the plane secure from the Russians until help arrived to retrieve the bombs. During the night the weather became unbearably frigid. The wind whipped so hard it was like an icy knife through their bones. The two of them were all alone in this barren snow desert with a small amount of supplies and the continual threat of wolves that inhabited the area. Mr. Jim had to fire warning shots into the darkness to keep them away and to let their presence be made known to the Russians. He said that the only reason that the two of them survived the night was because of the wilderness survival training he was taught in Boy Scouts. When the narrator introduced the main character of the story, the man, he made it clear that the man was in a perilous situation involving the elements. The man was faced with weather that was 75 degrees below zero and he was not physically or mentally prepared for survival. London wrote that the cold "did not lead him to meditate upon his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon man's frailty in general, able only to live within certain narrow limits of heat and cold."(p.1745) At first when the man started his journey to the camp, he felt certain that he could make it back to camp before dinner. As the trip progressed, the man made mistake after mistake that sealed his fate. The man's first mistake was to step into a pool of water and soak his legs to the knees. This blunder forced the man to build a fire to dry his wet socks and shoes so his feet would not freeze and become frostbitten. When the man began to build a fire he failed to notice that he was doing so under a large, snow laden spruce tree where he was getting his firewood. When the man had a small fire that was beginning to smolder the disturbance to the tree caused the snow to tumble to the ground and extinguish the fire. "It was his own fault or, rather, his mistake. He should not have built the fire under the spruce tree. He should have built it in the open."(1750).
When it was time to go, he took only a penknife, a ball of cord, some flint and steel, forty dollars, and an ax. The flint and steel were for starting fires. He hitched a ride from a trucker to the town; Delhi, nearest the old family farm. He set out in May, set up a camp in a terrible storm, couldn’t get his fire going was tired, and hungry and realized in order to survive he would have to keep his wits about him.
Just a valley of nothingness for miles. What was I to do with people I wasn’t even friends with for four days? The mere thought of it consumed me. Then I hear the scoutmaster shout, “Okay boys! We’re going to kick things off with a bang. Your first activity for today will be to locate your camping gear!” Immediately I thought to myself, “what? Are you kidding me?” The day shifted from bad to worse, and I didn’t think it was going to stop there. So here I was with my troop, maps in hand, the mixture of fear and anxiety overwhelming us. We contemplated our game plan for a while. Another scout, who would later become my best friend, broke the silence. “Well, better get going before it gets dark. Don’t want to be sleeping out in the open.” Reluctantly, the rest of us got up and followed.
Morehouse sent a boarding party to the ship. Below the decks, the ship’s charts had been tossed about, and the crewmen’s belongings were still in their quarters. The ship’s only lifeboat was missing. Three and a half feet of water was splattering in the ship’s bottom, though the cargo of industrial alcohol was still mostly there. There was a six-month supply of food and water—but no one to consume it.
People face conflicts every day of their lives. We all come across at least one incident in our lives that is challenging and we are baffled on what decision is to be made. Such conflicts may be an inner-conflict, a conflict between oneself and nature, a conflict between oneself and another person, oneself and God, or one and society. This paper will describe an incident in my life involving a conflict.
