THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: CHILD LABOR I feel the Mine Act of 1842 was very much needed. The conditions in which females and young children had to work were very unhealthy to the mind, body and soul. Little or no education was given and what little was given was long forgotten due to long strenuous work hours. The children and females worked 12 hour shifts. The women interviewed stated they had to lift and move extremely heavy coal wagons underground for lengthy distances, which optimize the risk for various injuries. Of the three interviews, Patience Kershaw, age 17, is a prime example of why the Mines Act of 1842 was implemented and included females. She has suffered several miscarriages due to the extraneous hard labored work at the mine. When Isable did have her last successful birth, she ended up going back to work in the mines less than a week. She also has had her cheek-bone broken due to a coal break. After working hard labor for 30 years is very taxing on the body and mind. The first young lady Ann Eggley had worked in the mines since the age of 7. The mine in which she worked did not subject her to having to work with naked men and boys. . Everyone wore “trousers”. The men did not “insult” the females. She was also provided a” good supper” however sometimes they did not get enough and there also wouldn’t be enough time to eat or drink. She also, like the other female interviewees worked 12 shifts. Although she worked at mine that was not as bad as Patience Kershaw, she still was overworked as a female. Although our assignment is based on the interview of the three females, one must also read the coal master, Mr. Payne, interview. Mr. Payne makes statements that make is seem as though there is nothing wrong in hiring females, children nine and sometimes under eight to work the mines. His testimony makes the female interviewees look like they are telling
