Journal 1 One pen-pal letter to Zimbabwe is all that was needed to start an everlasting friendship. In the novel I Will Always Write Back by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda, two best friends help each other learn about the others culture and how they live on the other side of the world. Caitlin, a girl from America, has learned that Martin, a poor boy in Zimbabwe, is having trouble staying in school and needs help with the issue of money. Caitlin has helped Martin get into school and she has helped his family survive. I have learned a lot from reading Caitlin and Martin’s book. The Big Idea that I learned was that you can accomplish anything if you put your heart into it. Martin had started out wearing rags and flip-flops every day, and as soon as he got help from Caitlin, his life turned around for the good. That saying was that there are people who are in worse conditions than you are. This saying comes from the quote by Martin Ganda, “I [Martin] have tried all means to get money for school fees by doing the following every day after school: I cleaned cars of people and got a few coins which I saved. I carried people’s luggage to bus stations and got a few coins” (Alifirenka and Ganda 139). Martin had done everything he could just to get back into school. He had to work for other people in order to get coins every day, which would never be enough funds for an education.
