In this essay/report I will explain to the best of my abilities, my possible career path. I have wanted to be many things. In grade 1, I wanted to be a superhero, and that hope stayed out for a while. Later on, when I was 10, my brain started getting new ideas, exploring the world around me, thinking of other things aside form cartoons and I thought to myself, how in the world am I going to become a superhero? I started thinking of other jobs like firefighter, police officer, engineer, construction worker etc., etc. But then I decided it was no good. Then one day when I was watching an interview on TV, a firefighter was being interviewed and one of the questions was: How long did it take you to decide what you wanted to be? And he said a long time. Then I wondered how long a long time would be, I wanted to jump into the TV and ask the guy how long a long time was. Hmm, I wondered, how long is a long time and then I answered my question. “It’s going to be a long time ‘till it’s a long time, I’ve got nothing to worry about.” That question just flew off my mind until at the start of grade eight when I encountered this question again, and I answered it. It took a while and some research but I answered it. I want to be a Neurosurgeon when I grow up. What is Surgery? Surgery comes from Greek via Latin: meaning "hand work". Surgery is an ancient medical procedure that uses specific techniques on a patient to investigate and treat a small or severe condition such as disease or injury. Surgery can be used for different reasons; some might be to help improve body function or appearance, and some maybe for religious reasons. There are many types of surgeries (e.g. neuro, cardiac, plastic, oral, podiatric etc., etc.). Surgery originally started in France in the 16th century, but was very rarely used. This French surgery was also only preformed for minor uses. Surgery back then was very risky and only a few patients survived. Now you might be thinking, what kind of doctors were those idiots, but think again, does surgery only need a very highly educated surgeon? The simple answer is no. The reason or should I say the greatest reason was that of the tools.

While Sir Harold is still considered as the Father of Modern Plastic Surgery, people assume that the Indians were the first to perform plastic surgery back in 800 B.C. With this discovery, British physicians visited India to observe the native methods of plastic surgery. The question we’ve been asked all these years is, what do you want to be when you grow up? But our answer is simple: we don’t want to grow up. Out of hundreds of thousands of different jobs available in the country, the attractiveness of Anesthesiology has caught my attention. Ever since discovering the career and its rigorous requirements, I have been trying my hardest to achieve it. To become an Anesthesiologist requires dedication, responsibility and passion and I believe I acquire those assets. Surgery offered physical results for the people, which became more important later on as evidence of healing and not quack science. However, in the beginning of the Middle Ages it was a problem due to the fact that people were scared of knives and of physical pain. Surgeons did treatments that would not be done by surgeons today because they do not fit the surgery spectrum. A burn does not require use of knives. After the surgery, there was no means of controlling the pain, bleeding or infection arising from these problems. Needed to focus on the external problems instead of the internal problems now. Growing up I struggled with the constant question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” With so many different career paths to choose from, it’s hard to become overwhelmed. As college gradually tiptoed in on me, I began to feel like I would never find the profession right for me. The few things that I did know I wanted in my future career were very simple to me. They were a job in the healthcare world where I could go home each night knowing I made a difference in someone’s life. A job that wasn’t just following a routine everyday but required creativity and brought new challenges while working with a diverse population.
Without surgery and advanced medicine in the 21st century, many lives would be lost to preventable medical conditions and infectious disease. If one was to ask every person who walked down a street in an hour time period, most would say they have had some type of surgery in their lifetime. Surgery has evolved since prehistoric medicine. Looking at surgery from before the common era, research has turned to sources such as skeletons, cave painting, or artifacts (Dobanovacki, et al 28). Trephination is the oldest known surgery. It was used to release the spirit within individuals who were suffering from epilepsy, mental disease, and headaches (Dobanovacki, et al 28). Circumcision and the use of ants to suture wounds were also known surgical practices in B.C.E. (Dobanovacki, et al 29). Surgery varied to great degrees from civilization to civilization. Different practices were carried over into the next civilization. In the article “Surgery Before Common Era”, these practices are explained in great detail regarding how they evolved and where the originated from if the place of origin is different than the civilization that is being discussed.
I was on a mission everyday trying to decrypt what type of life I should lead, my mind was always adopting new identities but my options were limitless. I knew I was an individual and since we all do not look the same our purposes can not be either. Pursuing a nursing career was not a plan, throughout my developing years I fathomed the thought of being in the medical field because it is science based and it is persistently evolving which would give me constant interest. My strong passion for science granted me the opportunity of being placed in the STEP program (Science Training Education Program) at SUNY Old Westbury.
1. As I grew up, I never really knew what career path I wanted to take. The thought that scared me was that whatever I did decide to choose, it was going to be what I would do for the rest of my life. When my freshman year in college came around, I majored in nursing. However, I never was fully certain that nursing was something that I truly wanted to pursue. I felt like the only reason I chose nursing to begin with was because my mother is a nurse. With so many jobs in the world it’s so hard to choose just one. Do you want to be an athlete or a doctor? You have to decide wisely because once you choose turning back is a difficult task. Being a surgeon is the job I want to have as an adult. Being a surgeon may be hard but in the long run it’s worth it. This career caught my attention as a kid. I would always watch these ER shows and see these crazy tasks that they would have to deal with, and through all that they’d be calm and collective. Seeing a surgeon save someone’s life inspires me to want to do the same thing. If I would have the ability to save someone’s life, it would allow me to see the world in a whole new way. Every year more than 15 million people in the U.S. have surgery. That being said the need for surgeons will never decrease, as there always will be a surgery to perform. A surgeon is always on call everyday of the year, they need to be able to perform under some of the most pressures situations.
