President Ronald Reagan delivered a speech in 1988 defining what the US is supposed to represent: “ ...a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than the oceans, windswept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace...And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here.” To people foreign to the American life, America looks like the place for success and a place free from prejudice, but this ideal glosses over the oppression people still face here that disregards the principles on which America was founded. In his poem he reveals, “Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else...Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs” Whitman is exhibiting his love for America and the mass amount of achievement people encounter by living there. His poem is like a description of the various whistles he hears as people work, which to him is a sign of the assorted amounts of prosperity by these people. He claims, “ My people,some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are- perhaps freezing to death.” I Will Fight No More Forever describes yet again more people suffering under the wrath of white people during the 1800s. His people fought many battles with the US Army while trying to flee to Canada, and when they were finally caught, he delivered the speech to his people telling them he could no longer lose any more people. They fought to keep the very land they lived upon, but were pushed off because white settlers decided it should be theirs. Chief Joseph read this speech to his people so they would realize why he could no longer fight. They were given a promise and it was broken, and sadly enough, there was nothing they could do about
