After, reviewing the vast amount of reading inventories that can be utilized to obtain a reading competency level for a student. I decided to utilize the Jennings Informal Reading Assessment, this assessment had all of the essential elements needed to analyze and evaluate the reading styles and comprehension level of a student. The unique qualities that assist me in selecting this strategy were that of the preprimary word list. The word list offers the student a chance to learn and observe terms that he/she may not have known prior to the assessment. This also provided me with a better understanding of the student usage of visual cues and ability to utilize prior knowledge to understand and recognize information. This is a cognitive ability
After taking the Personal Survey of Assessment Literacy, I learned a lot about myself and what I do know about assessments, and what I don’t. This survey allowed me to reflect on the process that I take to plan, develop, and administer tests in my class and what I need to do with the results. When I went through the criteria of all of the topics in the survey, I honestly did not know what the survey was talking about or what it meant. This was really concerning to me because I like to think that I do a pretty good job when it comes to instruction of my class and how I assess their knowledge of the material. I learned from this survey that there are a lot of things I do well during assessments and that there is still a lot that I need to learn to be an effective classroom leader. After scoring the survey, I noticed that I scored myself the highest in the section of During Test Administration with a perfect average score of 5 and scored an average of 4 in the section After Testing. The two lowest sections I scored in where in the General Considerations with an average score of 3.3 and in the section of Prior to Test Design with a score of 3.5.

In February of 2010 a teacher at my high school was diagnosed with an uncommon form of cancer called angiosarcoma. Ms. Ensign was a business technology teacher. Along with her teaching she was a varsity softball coach, varsity volleyball coach and an athletic facility manager for the school. One could also spot her at sporting events and school assemblies taking photographs for the school yearbook. Ms. Ensign would be treated monthly in Houston, TX. Even though she had this rare form of cancer, one would never know because she always returned to school the next day after her treatments. Ms. Ensign was the most positive woman I have ever met. She was someone who gave everything to her community and asked for nothing in return. How would one give back to such an amazing person? Fortunately, a senior named Manda conceived a plan to help, She called it Mission Ensign. Excelling in an area of literacy gives us the ability to comprehend or execute a task effectively and devotedly. Even those who start with nothing are capable of earning life time opportunities in order to better themselves. Despite coming from a Vietnamese family, I was unable to speak, read or write in my own native language. The devastation and shame I went through put me over my head, rendering me saddened since I was unable to even speak to my parents. If I was unable to speak to my parents now, how could I get along with them in the future? However, after enrolling in four years of Vietnamese classes in high school, I learned how to communicate and interact with others, making me literate in another field of language. The test taking lessons have helped me learn more about having good strategies for a test. I feel that with these lessons learned I can have more confidence to take a test and pass it. In this report I want to show why test taking is an important skill to learn. I also wanted to describe how I have prepared for test in the past. I also wanted to discuss three strategies I have learned from the computer tutorial in class and how I have changed my study habits so I can do better on test.
An Informal Reading Inventory is a great tool for teachers to use with their students to assess multiple concepts. One purpose of the IRI is to monitor the growth of a student’s word recognition, oral reading, and comprehension to determine the reading level of independent, instructional, and frustration. The frustration level is when the passage is too hard for the student even with help from the teacher. Instructional reading level is when a student can read the text with the assistance from a teacher, parent, or peer. Independent means that the student can read the passage alone with no outside help. Sitting down to your favorite romance or murder mystery novel does more for you then entertain. Enjoying the best chapter helps with brain connectivity, focus, and language comprehension. Reading anything helps your brain in some way. Whether you are just skimming or are super engaged in the book, your mind is working to improve. Getting involved in a good book can be better for you then you think. Finding something that peaks your interest can be difficult but it serves a good purpose in the end.
Teaching literature to young adults is one of the most challenging and enriching careers’ someone could have. Teachers must keep their students engaged while teaching them what they need to know all at the same time. A teacher is only successful in her job unless her students are successful in their studies. I want to teach my students what they need to know to be successful in life, but I also want to show my students how to become lifelong readers. In order to accomplish both goals I must use my teaching tools to provide students with an enriching classroom.
Throughout my entire freshman year, I have learned to communicate better, overcome difficult tasks, to comprehend all types of literature, ways to use and improve my reading skills, and several other things. Each of these items have affected my reading skills and how it has made my freshman year and beyond better.
