My love and belief that stories impact me enormously started young. According to Bruno Bettelheim, in Introduction: The Struggle for Meaning taken from The Uses of Enchantment, the use of fairy tales in a children’s life allows them to deal with their fears in a symbolic way. In order for a story to hold a child’s attention it must “help him to develop his intellect and to clarify his emotions”(263). Growing up watching fairy tales stories did not really have a meaning to me at first. As a child, I remember seeing them only as cartoons. 1. Growing up we all heard stories. Different types of stories, some so realistic, we cling onto them farther into our lives. Stories let us see and even feel the world in different prespectives, and this is becuase of the writter or story teller. We learn, survive and entertain our selves using past experiences, which are in present shared as stories. This is why Roger Rosenblatt said, "We are a narrative species."
What is a story? A story to me can be either a combination of characters and actions which can be fake or real. More like an adventure story used more for entertainment. Another example can be historical events a serious of events in the past which can be used for future learning. There are many different interpretations for a story. Many ways of telling a story also, for example the usual way of tell a scary story. Being in total darkness with a group of friends around each other and having one flash light for the story teller. It just makes the story a little spookier. Every story has its own unique way of telling it right.
All stories consist of a few common structural elements found universally in myths, fairy tales, dreams, and movies. They are known collectively as The Hero’s Journey. Understanding these elements and their use in modern writing is the object of our quest. Used wisely, these ancient tools of the storytellers craft still have tremendous power to heal our people and make the world a better place (xxvii).
In conclusion it is evident that the power of storytelling is a form of social control because many people look to the stories that are rooted in their culture and they use it to formulate their dominant fantasies and they also use stories to help them identify both others and themselves. Therefore the one who tells stories holds great power and the stories that he or she chooses to tell help reinforce certain dominant fantasies.
Myths play an influential role in all cultures and societies. Back when communication was not easy, stories were told among family and friends to help spread lessons. Values to help children to learn about how to live a blessed life are made into these stories. One may not notice the same thing that happens today. Also, stories play an important role in many different areas ranging from the survival of a species to preparation for a job interview.

The mere mentions of stories take me back to my childhood days. It was absolutely impossible to sleep at night without my regular dose of story from my mother. Normally, when one was a child, our parents would tell us fairy tales as bed time stories, or to simply entertain us. I believe that writing stories gives you more of an appreciation and understanding for a good book. All of the ideas that make a book come alive is from one author with an amazing imagination, who can captivate someone’s mind and tuck them into their world for a few hours. Every day in class I was allowed one hour to dedicate my time into a story, it is almost like entering your main character’s mind and acting as if it was you.
