I Am David This story is Written by Anne Holm , about a boy named David who escapes a camp that he has lived in his entire life. He is needed to get to Denmark where he is safe. Along the way David meets many people and makes some new friends. In this story you can tell that david is brave, smart, and self-confident and these character traits are placed all over in the book. One of David’s character traits is brave. David is brave because he saved a little girl, named Maria, from inside a burning shed where she was tied up. David is also brave because he steps up in front of people even though he doesn’t know if he or she is one of “them”. David is self-confident because when people offer him money, he doesn’t take it because he wants to earn the money himself. Also, David is self-confident because he gets angry when people try to tell him what to do. An example is when Maria’s family tells him to go home with them to pay him for saving Maria;s life, he only goes because Maria wanted him to. Finally, David is self-confident because if he knows it is dangerous he doesn’t do it and if he knows it is not dangerous he thinks about doing it. An example is when David doesn’t want to go with the england family because they don’t look like they are normal to David. So, as you now know, David is very brave, smart, and self-confident. 1. In the book, the father tries to help the son in the beginning but then throughout the book he stops trying to help and listens to the mother. If I had been in this same situation, I would have helped get the child away from his mother because nobody should have to live like that. The father was tired of having to watch his son get abused so eventually he just left and didn’t do anything. David thought that his father would help him but he did not.

So yes, David became more of his own person, escaped the society of Waknuk, and started a new life in Zealand. However, he also was betrayed by his own father, kicked out of his home, and was persecuted by people he knew and cared about simply due to telepathy. All of these factors, in the end, result in David being a more mature and resilient character, but also make him rather resentful towards the society of Waknuk or the world in general. Growing up is always an uphill struggle, but for someone such as David Strorm, the path is even harder. Yet, in the end, he finally made it to the top, despite all of the adversity he faced. This truly is the mark of a person who is willing to give up everything in order to succeed in the end.
It was not just these influences but he also had a deep interest in science and chemicals. He was alone for the early part of his child hood because of his father’s work habits and his mother’s illnesses. This being the case, David found it easy to become engulfed in books but more specifically The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments. The Golden Book was a large factor in most of his early experiments, and even played a part in some of his experiments in the later years. This book contained many science experiments and different types of chemical reactions. He used this book as a guide to learn how different experiments work, and also showed David how he could create his own tests. Although his mother and father were not very supportive he did have one family member that was. His grandfather always backed him up and realized he had a love for science. Then, the boy scouts came along. His father saw this as a way to get David out of the house and create more of a social life. Annemarie is one of the main characters in this book. she is a 10 year old german girl who lives in Copenhagan, Denmark with her mom, dad, and young sister Kirsti. Annemarie tells the story from her point of view. “It was only in the fairy tales that people were called upon to be so brave, to die for one another.Not in real-life denmark” annemarie struggles to find the definition of courage, but with the big journey that awaits uphead she soon finds out.
The characters that help David come to terms with who he is and prove that being himself is beneficial to himself are Uncle Axel, the Sealand Lady and Sophie. Uncle Axel helps David achieve self-awareness through genuineness and impartiality. When Uncle Axel was explaining how David and Rosalind may easily be closer to the “true image”, this displays his integrity: “Perhaps the Old People were the image: very well then, one of the things they say about them is that they could talk to one another over long distances. The center of finding out who everyone is was brought into play through the death of Marie. The story is told by David, only twelve years old, who sees his family an community in a different light for who they truly are under there cover. The basic story is David was a shepherd boy who lived in Israel. God chose David to take care of the Jewish people. The Philistine army was fighting the Israelis. A giant, Goliath, was part of the Philistine army and the Israelis were terrified of him. David was a young boy – not part of the army – but who was nearby. He saw how Goliath taunted and mocked the Israeli soldiers and he got angry. David volunteered to fight the giant. Not being a soldier, David wasn’t familiar with armor or weapons, and refused both. He went with his simple tunic and slingshot. David felt that his people were in the right and God would protect him – justice would prevail in spite of the weapons that the Philistine giant had. Too much confidence can cause a sense of arrogance, much like Odysseus. Not enough confidence can make you uninspiring and weak as a leader, much like David. People who live their own monomyth everyday, and have the right amount of confidence, achieve great things.
Maturity may come at any age and time in a person’s life. One moment he or she may be a carefree child, and then suddenly realize that they have been transformed into a mature adult by a powerful and traumatic experience. An experience they will remember their whole lives. Young David Hayden, the narrator of Montana 1948 by Larry Watson, has a traumatic experience. He discovers that his uncle has been sexually assaulting Native American women in his town. This is a heavy burden for a twelve year old boy, especially since it reveals that his beloved Uncle Frank is the "bad-guy". However, one discovers, as the novel develops, that David matures and grows in order to deal with this situation. He must come to understand what has happened and how the immoral actions of Frank will affect his family and its name. But most importantly, he must know that his integrity will be changed. He will learn shocking things that would mean nothing to a child, but everything to an adult. Larry Watson suggests that traumatic experiences transform children into adults. Therefore, disturbing experiences lead to changes of mind, growth in morals, and an emerging sense of adulthood.

He has extremely low confidence and belief in himself which is to be expected since he is in unfamiliar territory. His father tries to teach David the ways his grandfather taught him. David’s father is a responsible hunter, he only hunts what is legal and not threatening them, “Are we going to shoot him? […] We don’t have a permit” (Quammen 420). One of the steps to adulthood is learning to be responsible when others are not around, at the age of 11, David learns young but rather unfortunately in the end. Morals and values are an important step to adulthood, like Albert Einstein once said “Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value.” Having a solid set of values and good morals could be the difference in many of David’s future choices, and his father set him on the right path from an early age even though their relationship had several issues. This starts the journey to David’s mental strength shown throughout the story because it brings the right versus wrong to the center of attention. Taking care of family, taking care of the environment and the animals that inhabit the environment and not taking life for granted as he might have before tragedy struck are all part of the journey to adulthood.
