I am a member of the American Red Cross club and for the past two weeks we have been in the process of planning a blood drive and have been tabled in the dining hall so that the students of Longwood University would be informed and aware of the dates we plan to be on campus and have a chance to schedule an appointment when they are available to donate blood. The blood drive will be held for two days the first is on Tuesday, April 13, 2015 and the second is on Wednesday, April 14, 2015. The goal of the Red Cross club is to have at least forty people donate each day. My personal goal is to either have five people to make an appointment or walk-in. Since I was in high school, I have been asked by my friends to give blood, but I really did not consider it till I got to college. A family member of mine is currently battling cancer and has partnered with the American Red Cross to hold blood drives in his honor. After seeing how they have helped my cousin and the potential longevity, it will have on his life that’s when I realized it was the right thing we do. The thought of being able to help save at least three people’s lives every time I go makes me feel like a better person. I am trying to target the students and teachers on the Longwood campus to come donate their blood. In our past, we have been successful to meet our goal every time, but the success of the blood drive was because we had a lot of adult donors. With this drive it would be nice to bring in younger donors. It is very hard to reach students because it doesn’t occur to them to donate. We are trying to bring in more young people because if they start donating when they are young we will be able to use them longer. There are more than enough people that could make this
