In this chapter, Lynne Truss talks about the outdated and dreaded punctuation mark, the hyphen. The hyphen has caused controversy over whether or not it shuld be a part of the English Language today. The hyphen was traditionally used to split a word, and to show "that a word is unfinished and continues on the next line" (pg.146). This old style of punctuation is not liked by writers and readers across the board. Truss describes her experience with using hyphens as a disaster. She believed that "hyphen usage is a just bloody mess and is likely to get messier" (pg.149).
Deborah Gray White was one of the first persons to vigorously attempt to examine the abounding trials and tribulations that the slave women in the south were faced with. Mrs. White used her background skills acquired from participating in the Board of Governors Professor of History and Professor of Women 's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University to research the abundance of stories that she could gather insight from. It was during her studies that she pulled her title from the famous Ain’t I A Woman speech given by Sojourner Truth. In order to accurately report the discriminations that these women endured, White had to research whether the “stories” she was writing about were true or not.
Lori Earley was born in Rye, New York and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she received her BFA. Growing up she was always interested in art, but she was barely exposed to any. Lori’s style of contemporary surrealist figurative art was fully created on her own, since she matured early in her life. Her normal style is shown through her technique with oil paintings, but she also is talented with paper and graphite. Because her paintings are so unique, this made it possible for her to become the successful artist that she always dreamed of.

Williams claims that errors of grammar and usage are the most complex topics, which have been easily misunderstood by many people in our world today. Whether the grammar has to do specifically with literature or not, it has always obtained errors. William notably supports his claim by giving specific examples of professionals who have stated grammatical errors according to what they think is “right.” William also provided some personal experience and textual evidence to express credibility and accuracy of his argument. William’s argument is effective because the main points he focused on with evidence were powerful and stood out to the audience. The real life examples that William demonstrated to the audience gave a strong base to his argument because he showed how grammar errors actually exist in our society. He made it evident that the audience had their eyes opened to topic that had been ignored in the past. William achieved his argument by providing real life situations and by looking at various researches that analyzed the existence of errors in grammar. However, the ways that William could have made his argument more effective is by not having comments that seemed too self- indulgencing. Also he could have taken out evidence like the graphs that didn’t make
Language has been said to effect culture and a person’s way of thinking; in addition to culture effecting language. Throughout the last 100 years there have been apparent and subtle changes in the English language. The changes an English speaking person may see throughout their life time are different catchphrases, the way language is written, the type of formality used, and how deeply English is affected by cultures; as well as how it effects other cultures around the world.

In the article “The Name Is Mine” by Anna Quindlen, she explains her story about her name, why she chose to keep it, and why it has such meaning to her. As a result of keeping her maiden name, there were many positive and negative aspects that went along with it.
