Most people haven’t heard of Rwanda so let me fill you in. It’s a little country in the Eastern- South of Africa. Before I get into the messy bits, let’s go back in time, Africa had been colonized by European powers. After that, Europe decided to separate Africa into 50 equal countries, within that Rwanda was formed. Germany took charge of this country but not long after Belgium took it from their hands, Belgium decided to characterized the Rwandans. There were 3 groups: Hutus, Tutsis, and Twas. The Tutsis were favored due to their more “white man” features. Hutus were always taken for granted and were never allowed to be official leaders. Africa is filled with several hundred distinct tribes that all bear themselves in a different fashion, depending on each other, or even fighting each to get what they want. This exchange between the many tribes has resulted in a rich history of conflict, economic development, and culture. One small example of the possible hundreds of tribes is the Mossi tribe, who reside right at the border of sub- Saharan Africa, in Burkina Faso and also the second largest ethnic group in Cote D'ivoire . While a relatively small tribe compared to the likes of the Zulus or the Dinka, their tribe is made up of roughly 3.5 million people, which is still quite a large number.The Mossi are neighboring the people of the Dogon, Kurumba, Gourmantche,Gurunsi, Bisa,Dagomba, and Sisala tribes. The Mossi have an official language called More, pronounced Moray, that is spoken by the them and most of the population of Burkina Faso, as well as about 60,000 people in Togo and Mali. Like many African languages, More uses pitch to distinguish the meaning of words and phrases. Their political was very closely connected with their religion, so as the Muslim religion began to spread throughout Africa, they resisted conversion to the religion even as most of the tribes around them accepted the religion. This may be why there are some Muslim influences within Mossi society. As Africa was being colonized by Europeans, the Mossi were one of the last tribes to be colonized, and when French colonists conquered them in 1896-97, taxes were imposed that impelled many of the Mossi to move to Cote D'ivoire to earn money. The Hutu and the Tutsi have been in conflict with each other for years but after what happened in 1994 I don’t think that anyone will ever forget. In that year Rwandas Presidents plan was shot down and he was killed. In the days following is when the genocide started, because the Hutu believed that it was the Tutsi that shot down the plan and killed the President because he was a Hutu. The United Nations let this go because of the killing of ten of their own and because of their rules of engagement that resulted from the ten Belgian members being killed while trying to protect the Prime Minister. During a short time period of only a few months about 800,000 Tutsi and Hutu moderates were killed by the militia, other groups and even neighbors.
Since Burundi’s independence in 1962, there have been two instances of genocide: the 1972 mass killings of Hutus by the Tutsi-dominated government, and the 1993 mass killings of the Tutsis by the Hutu populace. Both of these events in Burundi received different levels of attention by the international community and the western media due to a lack of foreign governmental interest, political distraction, and an unwillingness to acknowledge the severity of these atrocities in Burundi. Interestingly, events of genocide occurring at times without these distractions received more foreign attention than those ignored due to these factors. Because of this, much of the western world is unaware of the Burundian genocide and events similar to it.

Rwanda was a German colony but then was given to Belgium “who favored the minority Tutsis over the Hutus, exacerbated[exacerbating] the tendency of the few to oppress the many”(History.com). This created a feeling of anger towards the Tutsis, because they had much more power than Hutus. The RPF decided to create a government consisting of a Hutu and a Tutsi holding the highest government positions. Congo was an astounding bestseller novel. It was a great fictional novel that took place in the depths of the Congo rainforest. The novel was later made into a movie. Both the novel and the movie were good, however, I prefer the novel. It just seemed like a more entertaining piece than the movie. This movie was based much upon the novel, but had many alternatives and a completely different ending than the novel.

In the article, Genocide in Rwanda, it talks about how Rwanda went through a genocide in 1994 that was composed of the ethnic groups Hutu, Tutsi and the Twa. The genocide started when the plane carrying President Habyarimana, was shot down. The Hutu retaliated to the Tutsu for killing their president and on April 6, 1994, 800,000 men and women in Rwanda were murdered which totaled about 3 quarters of the Tutsi population and thousands of Hutu for opposing the killing campaign that was going on. The end number was estimated anywhere from 500,000 people to 1,000,000 people that had been killed. Rwanda is still recovering from this and it really crippled their society and country. Although their government was responsible for the creation and destruction of the genocide, we can still help the people that were victims of this and now live in the aftermath of the Genocide as they did not carry out the Genocide, they were simply civilians of the country. The ways that the African country of Rwanda has been able to transform itself from a grief stricken state devastated by genocide to a vibrant and prospering country in just a matter of twenty years is a remarkable feat that deserves be noted and celebrated. In the recent 58th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, the theme that centered around the challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls was of a particular interest to Rwanda, as the country had much to share about it’s commitment and progress made in implementing many of the MDGs. Rwanda’s success can be attributed to a number of innovative initiatives to improve the livelihoods of it’s citizens. While it is important to recognize that challenges still exist within the country, initiatives such as the Vision 2020 Umurenge Program and the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS) have and are currently working to transform Rwanda into a knowledge-based middle-income country. With these initiatives comes a necessary focus on reforms aiming to improve the quality and accessibility of education. The basic source of power for individuals in a society is access to education and information, so as a result, Rwanda needs to continue to put policies and initiatives that work to improve education as a priority in order for the country to reach it’s transformation goals and prepare itself for a continuing future of prosperity and success.
