People did many things to prepare for Hurricane Sandy. Many people who lived on or near the coastline were given evacuation orders by government officials. These areas were likely to experience severe flooding. The people who lived in low elevations along the coast were particularly in danger. These people left their homes in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut; some were fortunate enough to find a hotel to stay in or relatives to stay with. Others who weren’t as fortunate waited in community shelters. Organizations such as the American Red Cross opened shelters specifically for people who had to leave their homes because of Hurricane Sandy. People who lived in Jersey City, New York filled sandbags with sand, and they built sandbag walls against doors and around tunnels to try and keep the water out. Some even boarded up their windows to help prevent flying objects from breaking the glass. Those who kept boats along the coast moved them to places that were safer. People even cut down trees to keep them from flinging into buildings or downing power lines. Many stores had a shortage of basic supplies. People who weren’t evacuated from their homes began to stock up on necessities. They went to grocery stores and got all kinds of supplies; bread, canned goods, bottled water, gas powered generators, batteries, radios, flashlights. Gas powered generators would help with power outages. Government officials warned people that once the storm hit it would be dangerous to go outside. Officials encouraged people not to travel. They ordered people to stay off of the freeways where meteorologists forecasted the storm would hit. The subway system in New York was closed, and all flights in or out of the area were cancelled. Schools and bus... ... middle of paper ... ...there was no power. It was like a domino effect. They are also changing copper wires to fiber active cables. They had to change and rebuild things after the sinkhole just like they did with Hurricane Sandy. After the Sinkhole some of the students had to move to Tangerine because there wasn’t enough space for everyone at Lake Windsor without the portables. Old Charley burns, the boss of the civil engineering company, was fired. He didn’t check and make sure that the places were safe to be building things on. He was bribed; he got vacations out of it. Since Charley Burns was fired, Paul’s dad replaced him. Paul’s dad told everybody that with him now the boss things were going to change. He wasn’t going to be bribed, and he was actually going to check and make sure that the places people were building things on were safe, and they weren’t building things on sinkholes.
A lot of homes, businesses, and other places were destroyed. Atlantic city homes were flooded. Many people, not just in New Jersey, had no power for days to weeks. The storms surge made it all the way past the board walk. Hoboken, New Jersey was hit hard. Their homes, businesses, and transportation ways and means were destroyed. Winds there were counter-clockwise making it worse for Hoboken. A lot of New York was hit too. They also had no power for long periods of time. Many of their homes and etc. were destroyed during the storm.
There isn't a way of preventing a hurricane, but there are ways to prevent injuries. If you have never experienced a hurricane, learn about them. Many places offer free hurricane tips and preparation. Always have the necessities if the is a hurricane warning; water, batteries, flashlight, radio, matches, canned food, hand operated can opener, candles and a first aid kit. Make an emergency plan with your family, designate a safety area in the house and a meeting place if you should separate.
Hurricane Katrina was considered as the worst hurricane in the history of United States. The winds and the rain were shattering people’s homes which collapsed and flooded. Thousands of people were suffering and dying. People were starving, and becoming dehydrated. Many people were left on the street and became homeless. Where did this flash flood come from, a reader might ask? The wall of water was made by the raging winds and immense power of Hurricane Andrew. Hurricane Andrew was the second most expensive storm in history that destroyed over 250,000 homes in the states of Florida and Louisiana alone. Hurricane Andrew was not predicted to make landfall, so when it did many civilians did not have any idea that the Hurricane was coming until it was almost too late.
On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast of the United States. The storm was measured as a category three hurricane which had reached winds of approximately one hundred and forty miles per hour. The storm had initially measured almost four hundred miles across affecting the areas of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Of these three affected areas, Louisiana contained the largest amount of damage; however, one city in particular suffered the greatest damage and was the primary focus of this disaster. Hurricane Katrina left a devastating scar on the citizens of the southern coast of the U.S., especially New Orleans, Louisiana. The category 5 hurricane was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the most deadly. Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29th, 2005 and after that day, 66,000 people were displaced from their homes. Of those who decided to ride out the storm with hopes of success and survival as they had experienced with other storms, they were found on their rooftops, in their attics, hoping for boat or helicopter rescue, relying on others for help to survive. The storm had reached 28,000 square feet inward to Louisiana, which was 60 percent of the state. 1,100 Louisianans lost their lives, and 200,000 were displaced and/or lost their homes (Davis 8). It was a devastating time of despair and suffering. People were put through experiences that would scar them for a long time. While preparing for evacuation, people left most of their belongings at home to flee to a safer city or to find shelter in the Superdome and Convention Center. Some even decided to remain in their boarded up homes. After the hurricane had past, a few hours went by and a levee located near the Mississippi River canal broke leaving New Orleans flooded (Delisi). Originating as a tropical storm off the coast of Cuba, the 1900 storm didn’t reach hurricane status until passing Key West, Florida. While in the eastern part of the Gulf of Mexico, the storm took an unexpected turn heading towards the Texas coast. Because of the lack of technology during this era, the people were warned that a storm of moderate intensity was headed toward them. Unaware that the storm was forcefully gaining speed, the Galvestonians were in no way prepared for the extraordinary weather which was quietly approaching. Suddenly, the ruthless hurricane struck the shores of Galveston, Texas, one of the wealthiest cities in the United States, famous for its shipping port.
